How I saved DVC some money (UPDATED with details from DVC OKW meeting)

While at DIScon, I was wandering around the parks when I recognized one of the DVC CM's at a DVC kiosk. I went up to say hi. After a brief exchange of hellos, this CM asked me if I knew anything about computers. I took a look and their monitor was way off center. So I fixed it. Now I realize that advertising doesn't come out of our dues (directly), but I like to think that I saved DVC a couple of pennies (not to mention some aggrivation). So if you happened to see some guy in shorts crawling around underneath one of the DVC kiosks last week, that was me.

On a totally unrelated note, as soon as I get my act together and find my notes, I will post a brief report on the Old Key West annual meeting that was held on November 29th. I decided to take time out of my vacation to attend the meeting.

Thanks for fixing that kiosk, TC! I'm sure it helped with several more sales that day.

Looking forward to your Annual Meeting report- soon I hope!

(Also, it was great to meet you at DIScon!)

Towncrier! Is there no end to your talents.:) :) :)

I didn't see anyone crawling around a DVC kiosk, but I did see a strange guy in colonial garb ringing a large bell.;) ;)

It was great meeting you!:p

I forgot about the meeting. I was going to go to the BWV one. Learn anything good? I talked with a DVC rep on the Boardwalk and he said Eagle Pines was not put on hold. He said it will be along the lines of OKW but will "blow OKW away". Should be beautiful.

I too saw the guy with the big bell yelling Hear Ye, Hear Ye.;)

I'm guessing there wasn't anything earthshattering at the meeting, or you would have posted already!;)

I'm still trying to unpack from vacation. I've got so much to do and I haven't found my notes. I didn't get to ask about pool hopping during the Q&A session, but I did ask afterwards. The answer I got made me think that George (DVC prez) should run for public office. He didn't say that it was going away, but he mentioned that it was never a part of the original DVC offering (in an official sense). Go figure.

They talked a lot about replacing major appliances this year (except fridges - that happens in 2002). There was the inevitible question about Florida resident discounts. We asked for a better ticket package. A DVC member from the UK asked about the point allocation scheme (many more points to stay Friday and Saturday night) and how it was impossible to get a cash ressie for 3 days and that 2 days is not long enough for someone to plan even a short trip to WDW. His suggestion was to change to points so that there were 3 expensive nights and 4 inexpensive night to encourage the cash paying public to fill the rooms (or at least have the opportunity to get a 3 night stay). The response from the board was a reminder that they changed the point distribution scheme in 1998 (oops - I meant 1996 - thanks Doc) and had to deal with a lot of angry DVCers. And that changing the scheme effects 100% of the members. My impression is that DVC is not likely to change point allocation without a lot of discussion.

The idea of putting a pull out couch (convertabed) in the OKW studios was brought up. Folks that stay in studios think that it would give them more of a 1BR feel. I think that this is another hot topic that will infuriate more members than it will placate.

People that I sat with were disappointed that there weren't any sweet rolls or fruit at the meeting. In years past there have been more eats. This year it was just hot beverages. And no goodies were given away. No pins. No hats. No nothing. I still enjoyed being there.

They had artist drawings of Eagle Pines (not the final name for the resort). I was going to ask if it was OK to take a photo, but I never did get around to doing so. As everyone probably already knows, the Eagle Pines architect is the same one who designed Coronado Springs. This new DVC club will be like OKW's big brother in terms of size and scope.

Beach Club Villas should be open in the spring.

Dues are going up 2.8%. This is the first increase in 5 years and the OKW folks are pretty proud of the fact that they have managed to contain costs enough to keep dues flat.

If I find any more information when I locate my notes, I'll let you know.

Thanks TC! Nice report.

A minor correction- the last point changes were 1996 at OKW. There were many grumblings after that from members. I guess no one likes change!

I was surprised that there were no goodies at the meeting- last year everyone got VWL pins and there was fruit/pastry available.

Glad you could attend and report!

Thanks for the report, TC! It doesn't sound like a lOT was done.

Thanks for sharing the info on the meeting.....and for your computer expertise!

Of course it was 1996. I remember it well. I guess that I just remembered them saying 1998 in the meeting. Thanks for catching the error Doc.

>Beach Club Villas should be open in the spring.

Really? If so, this is HUGE news, they aren't scheduled to open until Fall (October I believe) according to the last information I heard. Anyone else hear this or being told this? Did someone just misspeak?

I'll check my notes, but I believe that they were shooting for a springtime opening of BCV. Of course I was wrong with the 1998 date for point reallocation, so I might have misheard this as well.

Really interested in the BCV scoop as well, I'm going to assume this was a target date for spring, and no official date change was announced.

If you heard this correctly it needs to be in it's own thread, so it can spark much more speculation.

thanks.....Johnnie

I stand corrected. The Beach Club Villas will open in September 2002. They will however start selling points their this winter. Sorry for the confusion.

Doc, last year at the OKW annual meeting we were not given VWL pins. We were given the bluish/purplish pins with DVC & something about where the magic begins. The pins were not resort specific. I liked the continental breakfast when they provided it. I have to find my OKW notes.
