How hard is it to network 2 computers?

I purchased a wireless router so that DH & I can both be online at the same time...cable modem connection. How hard is it to connect them? I am reasonably computer savy and also not maintenance challenged. 1 computer is 1st floor bedroom while other is in unfinished basement. I will be attempting to do it soon but was wondering how involved it will be.

I mean this as nicely as possible:
My mother is tech moron. Yea thats probally harsh but she deleted windows once. We bought suplies, asked the office max guy and then went home. Well, she pesterd me to let her fix it herself. Well, I did and Im speaking to you now so she did it right. Its eaiser to hook two desktop units. Hooking up a labtop is a bit harder but we did that too. If you get yourself in a pickle call your local tech place. Most will do this for you for under 30 bucks. Heck, our tech guy did it for 10 on a weekend.
