How hard is it to have part of your party on the DDP and part of your party NOT on it

My in-laws and our family are going to WDW in a week and a half. We are renting DVC points and are going under separate reservations. I have been debating the dining plan for awhile and I think it may actually be a good option for us, but not our in-laws. They share meals and are not big eaters etc... How does it work if you have one part of your party on the DDP and one part not on the plan? Do you just get separate checks? Also, if there are extra credits on our account, can I let them use them? I also foresee some advantages to this like sharing our appetizers included in the dining plan with everyone.

I don't know about sharing credits, but in October, 2 of our party were DDP while the rest was not. We informed the server when we sat down and were given 2 checks at the end, no drama at all :thumbsup2

The Dining Plan is non-transferable, so it is not permitted to use Dining Plan meal entitlements for folks who aren't in your party. (As a matter of fact, most of the reports of Dining Plan enforcement in the forums were instances where patrons attempted to use the Dining Plan to cover more meals than there are guests on the package.)

This is a relatively controversial topic on the DIS, so the moderators have asked that we just state the Dining Plan rules, and ask that any other questions you may have about the rules be directed to Disney Dining directly.

We were in a group of 5 earlier this year and 3 were on the DDP and 2 were not. We just told the server at each restaurant and got two checks. It was no problem at all.
