Like, should I go out of my way to have it? It sounds yummy but I'm having trouble fitting the Kona Cafe into my schedule. Should I?

I have not been but plan to go next trip. I have heard from this board that it is VERY sweet and should be shared. But that alone is enough for me to go out of my way to try it. I hope you get to enjoy.

It is so yummy that when I came back from my solo trip to the World my DH asked me if I had it. When I said I didn't get to the Poly he told me he thought for sure I would have. :D

It is very good but more like a dessert than breakfest. It does go well with a cup of their kona coffee though! You may require a nap after all that sugar if you are anything like me!

I tried the Tonga Toast a couple of trips back because of all the rave reviews I'd heard. I have quite a sweet tooth, but even so, I thought it was vastly over-rated!

Definitely sweet. I could only eat about 2 or 3 bites!!!! It was nice to try but I would not get it again.

I didn't find it too sweet but the other people I were with who'd had it before said that we got there on a good day. It was good but not something I'd have to do each trip.

Here's the recipe if you want to try it at home:

Tonga Toast (Banana Stuffed French Toast)
from the Polynesian Resort

2 or 4 slices sourdough bread cut 1 inch thick
1 banana
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
oil for frying
whipped butter if desired
Maple syrup if desired

Depending on the size of the bread slices, cut a 1 inch pocket in one side of the bread slice.

Cut banana in half crosswise, then split each piece lengthwise. Remove peel and stuff 2 pieces in each pocket, again depending on size. Set aside.

Mix sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.

Mix egg, milk and vanilla until well blended.

Heat about 4 inches of oil in a pan to 350 F.

Dip stuffed bread into egg mixture, allowing it to soak in for a few minutes.

Fry in hot oil until lightly brown, turning to brown both sides. Drain on paper towels on cake rack. Sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar and serve at once. Top as desired.

I thought it was a bit over rated too. I would definately try it once, though. I couldn't eat it all, it was too sweet and with syrup, very filling. I wouldn't get it again, though. I would have liked less bread and more bananas in it.:D

How good is Tonga Toast? Its the best breakfast I ever had. We made a specail point of goind to Kona for Tonga Toast, and if I new it would be that good, I would have gone there every morning.

Do you need a PS for breakfast at Kona? We will be there Labor Day weekend.

I make PS for the days we want to eat breakfast there although I think you will have no problem doing making a PS the day before or maybe even the day that you want to go.

We love Tonga Toast...no syrup. It was wonderful years ago and then 3-5??? years ago it wasn't as good for awhile. A couple of years (2-3) ago it was back to as good or better than ever. We love it although I prefer to share an order.

I agree the last time I had it, it was way too sweet for me. Next time I will ask that they NOT roll the finished toast in the sugar mixture. I thought the sugar mixture was over the top on the sweetness level.

Tonga Toast is very special to us since it is one of the first breakfasts we had when we first started spending vacations at Disney. Our first visit was back in 1979 with our 4 year old son!!!!!!!!! We stayed at the Poly and it was just magical. Now when we go my husband and I split another breakfast entree and then we share the Tonga Toast as our special treat!!!!!!!! It is sort of a tradition with us and probably alot of other people who have been going to Disney for years and years!!!!!!!!!!!!

Denise,

Everybody has their own tastes, here's mine. I looked forward to this meal for 6 or 7 months after all the rave reviews on CompuServe's FL Forum back in 1990. We checked into the Poly and headed over to The Coral Isle Cafe. Ordered my banana stuffed french toast, took the first bite and almost spit it across the room. It was absolutely HORRIBLE. There must be enough sugar in it for 40 cups of coffee. Did I mention I did not like it??

That being said the Kona Kafe is worth the trip, just look over the rest of the menu and be prepared for plan B. The Kona coffee is the best on property, I like it more than Kenyan btw.

After spending a week at the Poly -- we ate at Kona Cafe 3 times for breakfast, and we had Tonga Toast and Kona coffee 2 days in a row.

It was *very* sweet, but I was looking forward to it, and thought it was heavenly. Went great with the fresh pineapple or Lillikoi juice too!! :)
