How far would you drive to a good doctor or dentist?

I have been with my OB/GYN since he started his practice over 20 years ago. His practice is in Annapolis, MD. When we moved to Utah for a year I made sure that when I went back to visit family, I made an appt. to see him for my yearly. Now we live in PA and it is 1 1/2 hours to his office. And I still go to him. Once you find a good Dr. you stay with them.

To the poster who has problems with the sounds at the dentist office. I have the same problem. I solved my problem by using a CD player or IPod and I listen to the loudest rock music I can stand. Guns and Roses and AC/DC is best. My dentist understands this and he even can hear when the music is changing songs and he will stop drilling until he hears the music come back on. I have been able to get through 4 fillings and 2 root canals this way. Good Luck!

I drive 45 minutes to see my dentist and I still haven't been able to find a good internist here locally since hurricane Katrina.

I would definately drive far for a great Dr./Dentist. I have a dentist in my plan that is literally around the corner, but he stunk! So, now I drive about 35 minutes away, and it is totally worth it!

We have always gone to a local family practice for checkups, never had a pediatrician. Their surgeons though are another story. They are all 90 minutes away at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Our dentist is 5 minutes away. The orthodontist is an hour away. I would go closer but that is the only one that I can find that takes our insurance. This orthodontist is part of the cleft palate team that my kids see. I have always tried to keep some of their visists local if I could, because they go so often.

My GI is about 80 minutes away from me in Annapolis, MD also. He's about an hour and 40 away from where I work and I'll be travelling from there in May for my yearly checkup from him. I've been seeing him since I lived about 20 minutes from there and really like and trust him and have no desire to try to find a new doctor if I do'nt have to.

I live in Italy. My opthalmologist, who is our yearly eye care appt, lives in Virginia. If I had a serious eye problem, yes, I would fly to Va to see her.

15 minutes max to either...and even that is to far for me...unless it was a life and death thing like cancer..the nI would be sure to travel into Sloan Kettering for treatment and that would be about an hour-hour and a half....but just for a dentist, no more than 15 minutes.

I drive about 40 minutes just to get to my doctor. It is mostly one lane each direction side streets the whole way too. He is a great doctor and works with me. I would drive an hour each way in traffic to see him if I had to.

My dentist is about a 20 minute drive. There is one a couple blocks away from me, but I couldn't stand him. At about 10 yrs old he came into the office to do a cleaning and didn't even say hi. He just came at me with the tools. To a kid, that is scary. Haven't been back since and never plan on it.

We live on an island just off the French coast. My dentist is on a neighbouring island, where I used to live. It's taken years' worth of visits to get to a stage where I no longer need valium for something as simple as dental checkups and I am more than happy to keep flying across when needed!

Oh, the flight only takes 15 minutes but with transportation to/from airports etc it takes pretty much half a day to go to the dentist. Soooo worth it!

Wow it's so nice to see that I am not alone. I drive 45 minutes to my children's dentist/orthodontist once a month. After Hurrican Katrina both the dentist and my family relocated in opposite directions. Having two DD's in braces and paid for I really didn't have any choice but to stay with him. It's also an added bonus that we do really like him and didn't want to switch.

We are so lucky to have most of our drs - GP, Dent, my Gyn and GI, DH's orthop and our local hospital within 20 min. The best endocrinologist I've ever had, is appx 45 min., as is our ophthalmologist.

For most serious issues we are blessed to have some of the world's best specialists just an hour away at Johns Hopkins, Georgetown and Wash Hospital Center and for the grands Children's Hospital. For DH, if he chooses to go to VA, we have a close outpatient center for minor issues or just an hour drive to the VA Hospital.

i drove 45 min each way when I was pregnate with DD, It wasnt too bad untill the weekly visits kicked in. But by then I was glad to take a couple of hours off work. The Dr office was great, if he was running late she would call my phone and I wouldnt have to sit there and wait for him.

We finally found a good primary care for DH and I who is only 5 minutes away. The drive 30 minutes for a sucky dentist, but it's the only one on our plan, I take the kids 40 minutes to the same Ped I went to. The practice he works in has an office in my town that I take them to for things like ear infections, but for check ups or anything serious I take them 40 minutes. The doctors that come out to the office in my town are horrible! One of them belittles you if your husband is a blue color worker, one of them has been charged with malpractice like 3 times and the other one is just blech. I go 1 hour away to my OB/GYN/Midwife, which is interesting when in labor.

My fertility doctor is about 1.5 hours away from me - each way. Sometimes, I'm there every day, so it gets to be a raging pain in the butt. But, she's amazing and I'd drive 5 hours each way to see her.

That's really the only doctor I see regularly. My other doctors are about the same distance, but it's usually only once a year with them, so that's not a big issue.

The REAL problem came in when I had complications and was rushed to the hospital twice. I had to drive over an hour to the hospital where my fertility doctor is. That was a nightmare. It was worth it though. I'd rather drive longer and have MY doctor come to the ER to be with me than drive shorter and have some random ER doctor.

Our son was born with hand deformities. It so happens that the doctor who wrote the textbook on pediatric hand surgery was (he's retired) on staff at Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta.

I flew back and forth with my son for pre-surgical consultation, surgery X 2 (1 for removal of wires), and weekly post-op follow-up. I took the first flight in the AM, and an evening flight home. DH & I stayed overnight in a motel near the hospital for the actual surgery.

His last surgery was done here by a doctor who trained with him.
