How far in advance do you book airline and rental car?

Our trip is not till October. Southwest not available yet but Air Tran is. Rental car prices still pretty high about 330USD for a minivan. I am hoping that rental car price will still go down. I remember paying a total of $230 for one week about a year ago last January. Thanks.

Keep in mind, there is no penalty for cancelling a rental car. I booked, cancelled, and rebooked my National ressies 15 times last trip. Everytime it would go down, I would make a new ressie and cancel the old one.

As for air, buy when you like the price. With SW, you can try to get a credit if the price goes down, but with Airtran you can't. Watch prices and buy when you are happy with the price.... I have purchased 7-8 months in advance and as short as 2 months... be diligent and be ready to buy.
