How far ahead do you purchase your plane tix?

For December trip 3 weeks ago.I was looking for good fares and got one I thought I wouldn't beat if I waited.Plus I bought trip insurance to cover cost if the if something would happen.

I booked for our October trip in March..I got $155 rt from LGA to MCO. Now the same tickets are $255.
