How early do you book your flight?

We plan to leave Dec 7 2006. I am afraid to book this early -- who knows what the year will bring? But I found a pretty good rate

As soon as I see a fare of $500 or less total for the three of us from Boston to MCO, I book it.
When we get back from our April 2006 trip, I'll start looking for tickets for our April 2007 trip.

Never more than 3 months out...not even my honeymoon last year in May. I have always had good luck on finding extremely good airfares. The couple of times I did book over my 3 month window...I could have kicked myself later because either the fare dropped (but I didn't get a refund) or the totally changed the flight times (I mean 3-4+ hrs off). I do better just doing it after that 3 month mark.

I book when I can get my fare for less than $200 from Logan. I have booked my Oct trip already...$179 for non-stop and at the times I need (well, at least right now they're the times I need...Delta will assuredly change them!!). I'm waiting for JetBlue to open up the fall/winter runs so I can book my Dec 7 flight!!

Since I have been flying nothing but SWA the last 4 years, I usually book as soon as they release their schedules for the time of my trip, which is usually about 4 months ahead.

SWA often has sales, and if the fare for my flights drops, I re-book at the lower fare and get a credit for the difference, which I can apply to next year's flights.

I say, wait. If SWA flies out of your home airport, your rate will almost certainly drop after SWA releases their fares for early Dec, saving you money even if you don't book with SWA.
