If we take advantage of a points transfer on the rent/trade board......what do I need to be concerned about. IF our UY is Oct. and someone posts that the points they are willing to trade don't expire until July 2010 and I want this CAN I bank them once they are in my acct. If I need to use them for say our up and coming July trip (to add a night)......they become my points once I pay for them right? I have never done this and would like to know "what to look out for or be concerned about'. Thanks

I'm kind of a newbie myself but what I've learned about transfers...

They keep their own resort and UY.
You can bank them but only if their banking window has not passed.
Same rules apply as banking your own points.

They are yours but... I thought I read if the other persons contract gets sold
or defaulted you can lose the points...:confused3
So maybe they aren't really yours...pirate: just someone elses points in your account that you can use...

The key to the "transfer and bank" issue is that the points be in the same Use Year - they do NOT need to be the same month though. 2008 points are transferred into your 2008 Use Year, 2009 points into your 2009 Use Year.

If you have an October Use Year and you transfer August 2009 points into your account, the transferred points will retain their original Resort and Use Year, but may still be banked (MS has been allowing these to be banked beyond the usual deadlines too).

In this case, if you have August 2009 points transferred into your Octover 2009 account they could NOT be used for a trip in July, 2009 since they cannot be borrowed into the 2008 Use Year. To use transferred points for a trip in your October, 2008 Use Year you would need to have points from another member's 2008 Use Year since transferred points cannot be borrowed (but they can be banked).

Get 2008 points transferred into your account and if you get more than you'll need for that additional night, those coule be banked into your 2009 use Year to be used between August 1, 2009 - July 31, 2010.

Good luck!

 :faint:

This all sounds so confusing and I some how thought it would be easier than renting. Maybe not. :upsidedow

I was searching for a similar question and found this very good explanation. But I have just one more question. I know that each member can only do one transfer per use year. I am wondering if I could transfer in someone's 2008 points and also transfer in someone's 2009 points? For example, I have a small contract with Oct UY. Could I transfer in some Dec 08 points from a member, bank them and then also transfer in some July 09 UY points. So I could take a spring 2010 trip using my oct09 points plus the Dec08 banked points and the July09 transferred points. Forget the outside 7 month home resort priority, wouldn't even want to try and get my brain around that! :rotfl: Would definetly plan on booking all within 7 months. Hope this makes sense. THANKS!:)

With your Oct UY, you are currently in your 08 UY and can receive both 08 UY transferred points and 09 transferred points. This option is available until Oct, when you will not longer be able to receive 08 UY transferred points as you will then be in your 09 UY.

I found that keeping track of transferred points was helped by mentally treating the transferred points as a one time "add-on" of a differnet UY/resort, as applicable. Then for each set of points -- yours and transferred in -- write down the options for vacations dates. For yours, that would be 3 years of borrowed, current and banked. For transferred in, that would only be 2 years of current and banked. Once its down in writing, it much easier to calcualte the points available for each possible vacation time.

Best of luck -- Suzanne
