I want to make some shirts for my family when we visit in october, I want to do a tie dye shirt with a mickey icon head in the middle I want to know if anyone would know how to go about doing this and it wdw would consider this copywright infringement?? Thanks
Kim

Do you have a Michael's Craft Store near you? They sell tye-dye kits. At least that would give you a head start. I have no idea how to get the Mickey on it, though.

Good luck!:sunny:

I'm not sure about the infringement, but to tye dye, you would buy rit and use it as directed (I'd suggest atleast 2 colors if not more). Then this is what I would suggest for making a mickey head (though I am NO expert when it comes to mickeys, I have done a bit of tye dying.)

lay the shirt flat on a table. Then in the center pick up where you want the middle of the first mickey circle to go just a tiny bit. grab it with a fist so that a small area of cloth is sticking out, and wrap a rubber band around it, make sure the band is really tight, and make sure there is a wad of cloth being separated from the rest of the shirt. Do the same for the ears, only make each section smaller. Then for the rest of the shirt, I'd wad it up into a tube shape, and wrap 3 or 4 rubberbands around it, leading back to the 3 wads for the mickey head.

Now, dip the 3 mickey heads in one color. (Try not to dip passed the rubberband, so that the dye stays in a confined area.)

With the rest of the shirt you can either randomly dip areas of the shirt in colors, or whatever you like. I'd suggest trying it on a cheap t-shirt (even if you have an old rag or shirt that you don't wear anymore, just to test out the method and change it up a bit if you need to before using it on the final product.)

I hope this helps! (Also, if it works, do you think you could post a picture?)

Wanted to add some tips just for general tye dying.

First if you have a few buckets, you should do it outside so that if it spills it's no biggie, you might just end up w/ some red grass :), pour the rit into the bucket, and use the hose to fill it up..

Second I'd suggest not wearing anything you don't want ruined, it will most likely get on you!

Third, If i were you i'd let the shirts dry off in the sun a little while before taking off the rubberbands, I think the ink will be less likely to bleed if you do this. Then after you do take off the bands, let the shirt finish drying in the sun. It will probably get nice and stiff, and I would suggest washing them separately from other clothes the first time, just incase any ink wants to run off.

I also wanted to say I think this is a really cute idea!! Good luck!

Thanks so much for the tips, I think I can do that. I will post as soon as I get them finished, I am going to try this out this weekend. Since we are going to be going in Halloween time and will be going to the Mnssshp I thought about tie dyeing the shirt orange, and then doing the Mickey head in black, and then writing everyone's names in the middle of the mickey head, do they have any fabric pens, or something like this?? Also, Should I do the orange tie dye part first??
Thanks,
Kim

I would love to see pictures after you finish. I remember seeing pictures of a Mickey Tie-Dye shirt before but I couldn't find it when I searched. :)

Yah, I'd do the orange first, and the black will cover that. Sounds like a great idea for halloween!

You can get fabric pens @ joanns or michaels or most craft stores.

Ok, I decided I couldn't wait until the weekend, so we went to Walmart and bought some dye and other supplies I needed to do it, I did a search on the web and found a site that has some interesting tips on how to do it, if anyone else is interested here it is www.ritdye.com/artoftiedye.asp if you look at it I have decided that by tweaking their sunburst design I can probably make the mickey head icon. I bought yellow, orange, purple and black dyes. and I guess I am going to use one of my dh's old white tees and go practice on it. I will let everyone know how they come out.
Thanks,
Kim

What a great idea! And great web sites!! I love tie-dye but I have never tried it. I am thinking of picking up some orange t-shirts and trying what you suggest....make "mickey" on the orange shirts! Thanks everybody!!:hyper2:

Ok, I made the shirt, not sure how to post my pic though, someone help please. It didn't quite turn out like I thought, the yellow didn't show up I should have known that thought, it is lighter that orange and the mickey head looks more the outline of stitch, so more practtice. Here is it though I will try to post How do I do this??

I've been tye dyeing for the past 10 years or so on a yearly basis...and I would never suggest using rit dye....

You can buy professional dyes online

TYE DYE

You also miss some important steps by going the rit route

Dye Activtor
Urea Synthrapol

Rit dyes just don't have the punch or staying power of professional dyes...which are just as easy to work with....

Good Luck.!!
