JIKO BABY Part II
Jiko has this interesting area off to the side where patrons can sit.

IMG_3296.jpg

I wonder how that works for ADRs?

Next stop before dinner was the Ladies Room. I was told it was quite pretty and, therefore, worth bringing my camera.

One of the many reasons I love AKL - the artwork in the darnest place.

IMG_3298.jpg

IMG_3301.jpg

Pretty tiling, sinks, and mirrors.

IMG_3300.jpg

Try as I might, I couldn't get a non-blurry picture of the door.

IMG_3302.jpg

Back to the table in time to be served my app.

Mitmita Spiced Ahi Tuna "Tataki" - with with Hearts of Palm Salad, Avocado, and Peppadew-Cilantro Vinaigrette $16.00

IMG_3306.jpg

It was delicious. Loved it!!!!!!!!

I didn't photograph any other apps. Sorry, but Jiko doesn't have much (if any) ambient light and I had to use my flash. Being that the room was dark, the flash was pretty disruptive.

Oh - I almost forgot - we must have had bread service with these wonderful dipping sauces.

IMG_3307.jpg

So - My Entree

IMG_3309.jpg

Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon - with hominy "risotto", California asparagus and Red Wine Reduction $41.00

Only - Note - my dish came with fingerling potatoes. Apparently the fingerling potatoes replaced the infamous mac and cheese. And now it appears that the potatoes are have been replaced by the risotto. Well, OK then.

So did I like it????? Yup - the filet was amazing. The potatoes and asparagus held merely supporting roles. In other words, they were fine.

I believe this was Cynthia's dish

Seared Barbarie Duck Breast - Potato and Spinach Masala, Royal Trumpet Mushrooms, and Port Emulsion $39.00

IMG_3310.jpg

She loved it.

I also managed to get a picture of Melissa's entree.

Braised Beef Short Rib - Truffled Potato Puree, Pearl Onions, Baby Carrots, and Cabernet-Tamarind Sauce $39.00

IMG_3311.jpg

I think we all agreed that Melissa's entree won the award. She absolutely loved it. The beef literally melted in her mouth.

Dessert was this

IMG_3312.jpg

MY best guess is the above picture is

Cape Malva Pudding - Warm Cape Dutch Cake with Vanilla Custard and Mango and Apricot Sorbet $9.00

Cynthia had this

IMG_3313.jpg

Cheesecake, Caramel and Toffee - Creamy Madagascar Vanilla Cheesecake with salted caramel, macadamia-almond toffee, whipped cream, and chocolate covered coffee beans $9.00

After my first dessert I was presented with my birthday dessert

IMG_3314.jpg

Two desserts, it doesn't get any better than that!

So what did I think of Jiko. I loved it! The wine was great! The decor was beautiful. The food was melt-in-your mouth good! It was a great experience. Our waiter was very efficient, but I didn't think he was super friendly.

So in terms of my rankings. Well, I like to rank according to overall experience because the food is great in all there places.

1. Cali Grill gets number #1. It was my first siggie. The food was great. Our waiter was awesome and the view was gorgeous.

2. Artist Point - Loved the food and the whole experience. We were treated like VIPs cause it was our anniversary.

3. Jiko - do I need to explain further

4. Flying Fish - amazing food, great wait staff. Not my favorite decor.

5. Narcoossee's (still can't spell it) - beautiful location, but just OK food.

After dinner I walked out to take a few pictures of the pool.

IMG_3317.jpg

IMG_3318.jpg

This is one of my favorite pools.

IMG_3319.jpg

Good Bye Jiko - Thanks for the great meal!

IMG_3325.jpg

Of course, no trip report would be complete without a random light fixture!!!!

IMG_3328.jpg

Can't say enough how much I love the artwork here.

Well, that's all my pictures from Jiko and AKL. But that's not all my pictures from the night. I took a few pictures of the Beach Club gift shop on our way back to the room.

And to all a good night!

Up Next - Day 6 Wednesday May 5th! Bye to Melissa, HS, and How Do You Think We Stay So Happy!!!!!!

MEK, your pictures of AKL are getting me so excited (only 34 more days!). Thank you for posting them.
:cool1: for 34 more days!!!! You are going to love it there. LOVE IT!!!!!! I hope you are eating at one of the restaurants there. They are all so good.

STILL loving your TR. Hope Jiko lives up to your expectations. DW and I ate there during our last trip and it was amazing! I'm anxious to see if you had some of the same items as we did on our trip.

It was great! Loved it. I would love to take Denny there in December, but I really want to take my son Nick to Cali Grill and Artist Point. So I am going to do those repeats!

I :lovestruc AKL. What a beautiful resort! It seems like it gets a bad reputation for travel times and being a distance from the parks. I only stayed there once and for just a few nights but don't recall being aggravated by the bus service. I think it is especially gorgeous at Christmas-time :santa:

Sure wish I was dining at Jiko tonight!!

I don't really understand why it has that reputation. I think the location was fine and the bus service was great. I miss it. I would love to stay there again in the near future!

Yeah - I wish I was at Jiko tonight too. Seeing those food pictures brought back lots of yummy memories!

Wow Mary Ellen the food looks amazing!! :thumbsup2 I'm glad you enjoyed the Tuna app as it looks great!

Thanks for your rankings - we are eating at Cali Grill and Artist Point so am glad they are your top two signature restaurants!

Again what great pics of the AKL pool, ladies room (love the mask as well as all the little details) and the art work :goodvibes

Ok, even the bathroom at Jiko looks amazing! And even though I wouldn't eat it, the food looks awesome! The theming at AKL is just so lovely and rich and detailed! I love it! I need to spend more time there!

The food at Jiko looks fabulous; we really need to get it on the agenda one of these trips. And more spectacular pics of AKL!

And to answer your question MEK, we are eating at Boma our second morning there for breakfast...we love the breakfast.

The tuna app was delicious. I loved it!!!!! It was just melt in your mouth good.

Wow
Thanks for your rankings - we are eating at Cali Grill and Artist Point so am glad they are your top two signature restaurants!

You will love those both!!!!!! At Cali there is a good chance you will get a window seat because that's where the tables for two are set up. I was just entranced with the view. When we got there it was still daylight (in December) and then we watched the sun set. It felt like a fairy tale.

Then at Artist Point they gave us a menu, took our picture, gave us McQueen and Tink light up toys. They were so nice there.

The food and wait staff were excellent in both places!!!!!

So, we are returning there in December and taking Nicholas. He enjoys food and loves to try new things. I would like Denny and I to try the other siggies that I haven't tried, but I planned the meals for Nicholas.

Again what great pics of the AKL pool, ladies room (love the mask as well as all the little details) and the art work :goodvibes

Such a cool place. Absolutely love it there! :thumbsup2

Ok, even the bathroom at Jiko looks amazing! And even though I wouldn't eat it, the food looks awesome! The theming at AKL is just so lovely and rich and detailed! I love it! I need to spend more time there!

The bathroom was so pretty! The whole restaurant was lovely. It was like a little private sanctuary. I loved that it had its own bathroom because in a lot of the Disney restaurants you have to go outside to a common bathroom. It was cool.

The funny thing is, the first time I visited AKL I didn't like it. I said it was "too dark". Boy has that changed. I  it!

The food at Jiko looks fabulous; we really need to get it on the agenda one of these trips. And more spectacular pics of AKL!

I can see that as being a perfect restaurant for you and Mark. Sometimes I prefer to go to the resort restaurants when I am NOT staying there. That way I am sure I am getting out and about more.

And to answer your question MEK, we are eating at Boma our second morning there for breakfast...we love the breakfast.

I have never had Boma breakfast, but I have heard so many good things about it. Hmmmmmm. That gives me an idea - maybe on our last day. :rolleyes1

You will also love the Mara. It's my favorite resort counter service. Yummy flatbreads and sandwiches and zebra domes!

Wow Jiko looks awesome! :cool1: I keep hearing such great things about it, but it's just one of those places I can never fit into our itinerary! :rotfl:

Your pictures of AKL are making me regret my decision to switch to WL this year! I really, really want to stay there! :thumbsup2

Great update and photos Mary Ellen! I showed my girls some of them and we all agree, we will be visiting AKL on our next trip!! (Whenever that is lol)

Can't wait to see more of your beautiful pics!

We have a reservation at Jiko on our upcoming trip and DH can't wait!

Thanks for the detailed report!!

Still following along on this great Trip Report.:goodvibes
I wish i could get your Tuna App in an entree size!
Jiko is on my list, but with the next trip being a graduation trip for my son, i doubt it will happen this time. :upsidedow

Thank you again.:flower3:

KIM

So happy you all had a wonderful experience at Jiko. I love AKL. I think its one of the most amazing places on property, and we haven't even stayed there! Just eaten there and explored a bit. We came super close to staying there this past July, but I switched due to Max's lack of interest in wildlife. Jiko is fantastic. We've had two excellent meals there.

I agree with your list, though...Cali Grill is still my favorite and someday we will return! :goodvibes

Your meal at Jiko looks awesome!! I really want to try those short ribs, they sound great. (And I need to visit their bathroom, apparently!)

I'm super-looking forward to CG and AP now, seeing them ranked above Jiko on your list! :cool1:

Oh, MEK...you made me sooo homesick with your beautiful photos of both AKV & BCV!!! I am glad you enjoyed Jiko- I think it is such a beautiful restaurant, and I love the food. Did you have red wine? Pinotage is a grape that is only grown in South Africa, and they have some wonderful bottles there at Jiko.

Thanks for such a wonderful update!!:goodvibes

It definitely requires a special trip due to its location, but it is so worth it. It's a cool place. Great ambiance. Just another reason to go back again, right?

Your pictures of AKL are making me regret my decision to switch to WL this year! I really, really want to stay there! :thumbsup2

You will love WL, so think about AKL for your next trip. I was certain I would like WL better than AKL, but it turned out to be the opposite. :confused3 Go figure. I'm really not sure why, but I still think it has something to do with the music and the great artwork.

Great update and photos Mary Ellen! I showed my girls some of them and we all agree, we will be visiting AKL on our next trip!! (Whenever that is lol)

Oh - you will love AKL. It is fabulous and it's such a great all inclusive resort. If you think about it, there's probably more to do there than the other deluxes because of the animal factor. Plus its so cool talking to cast members from Africa. It really adds a special factor. Oh yeah - and the relaxing music - don't forget about that.

Can't wait to see more of your beautiful pics!

Thanks - well HS is next on the agenda so stay tuned!

We have a reservation at Jiko on our upcoming trip and DH can't wait!

Thanks for the detailed report!!

Oh - you will LOVE it! It was really, really good. A great dining experience. Now if only Cynthia would appear and tell me what kind of wine she ordered for me that evening. :rotfl: But, I think she is very close to her cruise departure so we might not see her till she gets back!

Isn't it funny how some kids have no interest. When I took my nephew two years ago he could have cared less about the animals. I couldn't believe it. Crazy! :confused3 I was glad I didn't spend the extra points on a savannah view, because the teens sure didn't care. :rotfl:

Jiko was a wonderful experience. Now I can officially say that I have tried all the restaurants in AKL and they are all wonderful! :thumbsup2

I agree with your list, though...Cali Grill is still my favorite and someday we will return! :goodvibes

There is just something special about the Cali Grill. That special elevator, the view, the fireworks, the incredible wait staff. I think I already have my December meal planned and I am definitely having some sushi!

They looked fabulous. If I was going back I think I would definitely try the short ribs. YUM!

I'm super-looking forward to CG and AP now, seeing them ranked above Jiko on your list! :cool1:

I am sure the food is equivalent in all three, but I think because I went with Denny to CG and AP I rated them higher. Not that I don't love my East Meets West girls, but Denny and I don't get out that much so both meals and experiences were just so top notch!

Kim - I almost missed your post (past my bed time and all that LOL). That tuna app would be a wonderful entree. I had something very similar to it at the Kona cafe which was entree size. Fabulous.

So - your son is not an adventurous eater? I am taking my 17 year old to Cali and AP in December. But my son who just graduated could care less about a signature meal, so I know what you mean.

Glad you are still enjoying the TR!

I made myself homesick and they are even my home resorts, but I think they are my two favs. Of course, I still love my SSR and VWL!

Jiko was wonderful. All the restaurants at AKL are wonderful so if I had to pick one resort to eat at, it would be AKL. All the food choice are great.

I had white wine and Cynthia picked it for me. She knows a lot about wine, so I tapped into her expertise. But maybe that was the pinotage that she had. Hopefully she'll post, but she is getting ready to cruise to Africa.

Mark and I went on our adults-only anniversary trip on Valentine's Day. We were seated directly in front of the window, just in time for the fireworks. AMAZING! I have been trying to get back there ever since, but I always back out at the last minute because we're with Max. Someday... :rotfl:

That's where we sat too! It was wonderful. I felt like I was in a fairy tale. We watched the fireworks from the observation deck after dinner, then we walked into MK for "last call" Oops - I mean park closing. :rotfl: Watching the sun set over the MK sitting high above the Contemporary was amazing!
