how do you take care of tadpoles?

The beach said we could take home a few tadpoles to take care of and when they got bigger return them
We bought tadpole food, took rocks from the beach, etc. Brought them home on Sun, here it is Thurs - 2 of the 3 turned into small frogs and then died - the 3rd didnt make it that far
What do we need to do differently? DS was upset - thinks maybe next time he may just look for them while at the beach

I wish I could help you, but all the tadpoles I ever collected as a kid croaked (no pun intended) pretty quickly.
