how do you say and spell the name Bailey for a girl?

You may not hear it with a long A, but I'm assuming in school you were taught that words like that do, indeed, have the long A sound.

(p.s. why is the quoting feature all weird?!?)

That's fine. It was never my argument that it doesn't have a long A. The dictionary says it has a long A (although I don't hear it when I press the pronounciation button).

This thread, however, asks how we pronounce these words. I do NOT pronounce tail; tAYl and I do not hear it that way when others say it.

A region based speech pattern and/or pronunciation can be normal in a particular area of the country.

Getting back to kids names, though, there are probably some valid reasons for avoiding extremely unusual spellings or pronunciations that generally don't conform to standard English. It's not problem in pre-school, Mom instructs the teacher. Beyond that, though, I think it would be tiresome and possibly embarrassing to have to correct the teacher in each and every class for your school career. My given name is rather old fashioned...not as bad as Gertrude, but you get the idea. I really hated having it called the first day of school each year, and then having to explain that I go by a nickname. I think it would be similarly annoying to always have your name mispronounced, and misspelled.

As an adult, I only know one adult who has an really, really unusual name and spelling, personally. (It's sort of a contrived variation of a couple of names, with selected unusual vowel sounds.) Every year at the office Christmas party (open to spouses and significant others) she has her name tag on, her name listed, and a pronunciation guide under it.

As for the sounding southern...just to clarify, I am not/was not trying to put down the southern drawl (I love it). I was just saying that, for me to say tail with a long 'A' (like May), I'd have to be trying to imitate a southern drawl.
So, when you say the word "tale"......do you have to try to imitate a southern draw??

Western NY.

When I say/hear tail, I do not say/hear tAle. I say/hear t AH l (not to be confused with t AW l (tall)....lol). Tail definately does not have the same 'A' as Day or May. In order for me to say tail with a long 'A' I'd have to be trying to sound southern.

Jess

Where in WNY? I come from near Buffalo, and definitely tail and mail have the long a sound.

So tail rhymes with pal, but not pail!

This is so much fun! :rotfl2:

Why is that quoted like I said it? I do NOT think tail rhymes with pal.

The quote system is really messed up in this thread....or at least whenever someone quotes "jess."

As another posted listed earlier, my dog (a golden retriever) is also named Bailey!

So is the dog that lives across the street from us. It is really quite confusing when you holler "Bailey" out the door!

Huh?

Jess

you said when you try to say the world "tail" with a long A, you have to try to imitate a southern drawl. But the word "tale" is pronounced with a long A.

And you said you say the word "tale" with a long A, so I'm asking if you have to try to imitate a southern drawl when you say the word "tale" with a long A.

Because to me, the two words are said EXACTLY the same.

I never said I say TALE with a long A???

Sorry, I didn't realize that happened. I went back and fixed it.

haha...thanks. I don't want people thinking I don't know how to pronounce simple words like "tail." :)

I noticed that, too... something STRANGE is going on... I think someone's trying to pull our legs... or t AH ls..... :lmao:

Wow I am amazed by the # of people who mispronounce such simple words. pail is the same as pale, pal is totally different. Pail has a long A sound pal has a short a sound. It's really very simple.
