Just been thinking how does every one save or budget everyday life so you can manage to go to DLP? Any tips on how to save, or earn a bit extra?

Im a sinlge mom, so I live on a weekly budget for food etc, and I put a bit away each week to pay for DLP and spending money. My son has autism so we can apply for funding to different charitys to help with a holiday away each year. Also when im saving for spending money, im tempted to spend it if I know I have it, so each week I go down to Thomas cook and put that money into euro's, so that way im not tempted to spend it and I know how much more to save etc. It works for me, but it might not work for everyone

Problem with doing that is your going to get the worst possible exchange rate exchanging your money like that.

yeah I know that, but if I didn't do it that way I would be tempted to spend it, I know what im like, done it in the past. :rolleyes1

I have a few of those tin money boxes which you can only open with a tin opener - that way I cant dip into it to pay the window cleaner etc :rotfl:
We are lucky in that we can normally book our DLP trips without too much financial pressure but I try to put as much as I can into the tins each week to cover costs when we are there. We were last in DLP in november and since then I have been saving in the tin again for our trip in february. I put in all my lose change and every monday put in the whole contents of my purse :scared1:

I think I must have around 500 euros in there now which will pay for some lovely dinners in DLP.

I have an old shoe box which has a small slot on the lid for putting money in, i then celotape the lid down tight and put whatever spare cash i have in there. The money in this box i use for spending money. My wife and i both work full time so we are lucky enough to be able to save up for holidays, but it still takes us almost 2 years of saving up to be able to take our kids to disney.

I have a friend in work who either takes out a loan or a credit card to take his kids to Florida. I would never dream of doing that. Very irresponsible i think. Work hard and save hard is my motto.

Do you have a trusted family member or friend who you could give the money to instead?

C x

I could as I have done that in the past... how much am I really missing out on tho? if its only a few euro then this way is fine, but if it will be a lot then might consider this

I put away £100 a week for 2 months and that's all our food and spending money sorted

I scrimp every week! I gave up smoking and put my savings into the DLP fund. So that's ¬60 a week plus some months I'll put away the children's allowance minus bills but most months the children's allowance goes towards school clothing, Christmas etc. I put down deposits for onsite hotels to save the stress & bother of making one, big payment.
I also plan months ahead so that i know when DLP is feasible. So far I've booked May, November this year, March next year & I'm reckoning on June 2015 and January 2016 and I'll have enough to paint & recarpet the hall too & maybe tile the kitchen provided no big appliances bite the dust on me!
It takes a lot of planning and being strict but the pros outweigh the cons and I make sure I factor a few days out & some nights away camping so it doesn't feel so austere!

Oh and tin money boxes are a god send. I have one I put ¬2 in daily to help with spends plus another openable tub for the weekly savings > i take money out to pay the bits & bobs like flights, car parking etc as I'm going along.

The fact I'm unable to use the tin openers is a benefit in my case!!

At the beginning of each month my bank withdraw automaticly an amount from my account and put it on my own "Disneyland" account.

I have 14 month from now on to save the money incl. train tickets and money to spend for souvenirs for our next trip. So its a good amount each month and I do not notice the money that much.

:wizard:

same here, I have an acount, I transfer the money. In order to spend them, I'd have to do a transaction again or go to the bank. And it's just do inconvenient :lmao: Also, we put certain coins in piggy bank and this way kids save a good amount.

We just transfer money from dh's wages to a savings account each month. Thats not just disney money but also any other holidays, christmas etc. Our ds saves loose change and then changes it before disney, last year he had £130 in coppers :-o (it was very heavy to carry to the coin machine!!)

DW and I do the same, we have a web savings account with our bank and we both put away a fixed amount each month. Then what ever is left in my account at the end of the month gets put in there as well.

We also have a separate account for holidays, and we put anything we can into there. Money from ebay sales, car boot sales, 'recycling' old phones, etc etc.

My kids saved over 150 eur like that. I just gave it to my husband (he can change that at work no problem).

I put £20 away each month when i get paid and so does my partner. You would be amazed at how quickly it adds up, we have £480 at the end of the year which takes a lot of the pain out of paying! We also try and tie it in with celebrations such as birthdays and anniversarys as a present as you are already spending money on presents! Nice way to celebrate something special too!

Up until last year we had to save every penny to pay for our trips.
My husband now has a new job and earns around double his previous income so we just booked and paid for our November trip from the surplus money from last month.

We will save a % of this money from now on and at the end of the year money for spending will come out of it, as well as any other holidays/emergencies etc.

Our boys will still be saving their pocket money, I think it helps teach them that the money for these trips and the things they have while we are there doesn't grow on trees x

Oh yes, it really does. I just tell them that "it costs just like "something" in DLP" or "if you save this much money, you could do this in DLP". Works every time.

We do this too. I think saving is a great habit to get kids in on. DS got ¬30 from his nanny & pops for his birthday and it went straight into his money box without me even prompting him! Was chuffed with that!

When we start thinking about a trip we get an estimated overall cost (including food and spends); and divide it between however many months it is before we go - then save that amount each month. If the monthly amount was not manageable then we wouldn't book or would book for further away. We also do a big ebay clear-out in the run up to a trip for extra treats; and with the Feb "birthday" trips family give us/Rosebug euro's for Xmas/birthday!

We save all of our spare income each month anyway (we never used to; saving is new to us unfortunately) so we pay for the flights and deposit out of that.
