We need to make volcanoes for centerpieces for DS's Blue & Gold banquet (cub scouts). We're thinking about putting dry ice inside so they will look like they're smoking. Has anyone made one?

I've never made one, but I think you also use vinegar and baking soda to do one

I actually need to find out how to build the volcano mountain. We won't be doing vinegar and baking soda because they will be on tables where we will be eating dinner.

1. Break out the chicken wire to make the shape. Staple to a wooden base. You can make a dip on the top to place a plastic cup inside to hold the "lava". If you wnat the "lava" to run down the sides you might want to create a "catch" area around the base to catch the mixture.

Feel free to try out the lava mixture as a dry run.
mixture: 1. steam only, place dry ice into a smal amount of water, or 2. baking soda and water mixture if you want it to cascade down the sides

2. Cut up strips of newspaper that are about 1-1.5 inches wide and as lon as you would like

3. Mix up paper mache or a flour/water mix, place newspaper strips into this and lay on wire frame. Repeat process until covered.

4. Once dry paint.

5. Decorate base with moss, small trees, etc

6. You can have them steam during the event or place the baking soda in a separate cup that can be poured into the water during the event.

HTH.

Yep paper mache- over chicken wire is the way to go. If you are doing the dry ice thing- (nice touch) you may want a larger container inside to hold it and not just a plastic cup in the mouth-

You can put the plastic container on the base- build the wire around it in a mountain shape- paper mache it, paint it, add moss and twigs for trees if you want... When on the table put water in dish and then use tongs to drop dry ice into the volcano... Just make sure the kids don't hold their heads over the opening

If you want to get fancy you could also add red lights in the volvano too so the "steam" will come out with a red glow to it too- you could marker over a touch light (at most dollar stores) or get red christmas lights...

Yes, the volcano shape should sit over a good cup or container.

It might work to just make the mountain cone shape out of something like cardboard.
Or, I would try to think of something that might have a cone shape that could be used.

Here is what I found at dryiceinfo.com

It sounds like the smoke will only last for a few minutes each time.

VOLCANO
Dry Ice can add the right touch to the typical school volcano. The "smoke" will come out the top and flow down the sides for several minutes. Inside the volcano must be a container to hold hot water. If hot water is not immediately available use a thermos to store it. The hotter the water is (nearly boiling if under adult supervision) the better. The bottom must be sealed tightly. Otherwise Dry Ice fog will leak out the bottom. Use putty or some other sealant. At the time of eruption, use gloves and put small pieces of Dry Ice into the hot water. The volcano will bubble and "smoke" for several minutes.

I've made one using a plastic 2 liter bottle as the base and used other things to go around the bottle.

One time I used modeling clay and another time I used something like papier mache.

Seven years ago, back when my Eagle Scout son was in 5th grade and a Webelos II Scout -- he and his Dad made a Volcano cake for the Cub Scout Father and Son Bakeoff.

I wish I knew where the recipe went to. I believe that they got it out of Woman's World magazine. The volcano even erupted! They won 1st place with the cake.

Have you tried to google and come up with some results?

Edited to add: Okay, I googled and came up with these results:

When I read the title, I thought you meant a Rainforest Cafe volcano. Mmmmmm

My best friend and I made a volcano for a science fair project. This was back in the late 70's early 80's. Can't remember how we made it, but I do remember that we caught her kitchen floor on fire:rolleyes1 !!!!!
