How do you get to Hilton Head Island from far away?

I'm curious how people get to the Hilton Head resort from a significant distance. Coming from San Diego, all the airlines I checked have at least one stop on the way, making it a whole day to get to Savannah. I also looked at going from MCO to SAV and it was the same thing with at least 6 hours of time because of connecting flights. I noticed that driving from MCO to the resort is less than 6 hours. I didn't think to check LAX to SAV, none of the connecting flights from SAN showed LAX as a stop.

Obviously, people on that coast can drive. How does everyone else get there?

Yeah you’re gonna have to connect somewhere… Savannah isn’t as big of a market as LA or Atlanta in terms of direct nonstop flights. You could preferrably go through Atlanta and then do one of two things:

-drive I-75, change over to I-16 when you hit Macon, then change to I-95 when you hit Savannah, and finally take the exit onto 218 when you enter SC
-take a connecting flight through Atlanta on Delta and continue from there to Savannah Airport

Flying directly into Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) is awesome — it’s right on the island, just minutes from the Disney resort, so you skip the drive from Savannah! ✈️

HHH has nonstop flights from several major airports, including Charlotte (CLT), Atlanta (ATL), Washington National (DCA), Philadelphia (PHL), Chicago O’Hare (ORD), New York LaGuardia (LGA), and Newark (EWR), depending on the season.

If you can connect through one of those hubs, you could land on Hilton Head itself — big time saver, and super convenient!

We connect to fly into Savannah, but then, considering where we live, we connect to fly almost anywhere. You also might consider Charleston-we used to fly into there sometimes, but last time we were there things were changing around.

we fly from europe.

So we fly into MCO and drive the 5-6 hour drive to HHI.

Stay for a week ( or if i get 1 or 2 more nights with different points :-) ) and then stay at WDW for the rest of our vacation

We live in a hub city for Delta, so we were able to take a direct flights to SAV.

If you don't want to connect and are willing to drive, try ATL (via Delta) or CLT (via American). But pretty much no matter what you do, you are going to spend the day doing it.

I just booked this trip and it was shockingly hard to get good flights that didn't last 8+ hours (due to layovers) at anywhere close to reasonable pricing. This is the best we could do:

Arrival: Drive 90 miles to nearest airport, fly out in afternoon, arrive at nearly 10 pm at Savannah after 1 stop. Then we drive in via rental car.

Departure: had to leave a day earlier to even get a flight at a reasonable time. Flying out in early afternoon straight from Savannah to Nashville. Had to stay at Nashville overnight to get a reasonable flight plan. This works well since we have family to visit there, close to the airport. Fly out from Nashville very very early the next AM to our airport 90 miles from home.

This is the very very best I could do. If the flight options are usually like this, HHI probably won't be a common trip for me, but I'm very excited to try it and bring my in laws. These flights really made Hawaii look like an easy trip to book in comparison.

I think it's possible that I won't ever get there because I don't desire it enough to spend an entire day getting there. Driving from WDW is a possibility, though, and only because we've never driven through those areas and it might be interesting. 🤷

It's a combination problem of coming from an area with limited flights, going to an area with limited flights. Someday I dream our very close local small airport will have direct California and Florida flights, but so far it is only a dream. Before Covid, flight options were much better here.
