How do you find out what school supplies your kids need for next year?

I know that last year the kids that were going into 6th grade , were required to specifically get certain things, subjects were color coded. There was a huge problem with parents finding the materials and the second week of school there was a parent/teacher conference in the school library. At that point , parents were told that next year ( this year ) this would not happen and papers would be sent out in June with the report cards.
No papers have come out . I would prefer to pay a set fee and not have to worry about school supply shopping.
Last year my friend found herself in the middle of all this fiasco with her son , and it was not a pretty sight to see parents fighting over the same red folder or the last 6" binder.
I will go and speak to the principal sometime next week, maybe we can do something to give the parents a heads up.

I just stock up on the same basics every year -- colored duo tang folders, pencils, erasable pens, markers......etc. In 7th grade they need a specific calculator if they want it, otherwise the school will supply it in class. We always get the same stuff, I just grab it during the summer when on sale. Drives my kids NUTS.

We need typical things like pencils, crayons, paper, glue...etc. But we also supply folders, packages of construction paper, and notebooks. We are also asked for boxes of tissue, antibacterial gel, post its, baggies, sharpie markers, and dry erase markers.

I know the dry erase markers are for the teacher's use...no chalkboards in our school but if each child brings one package...isn't that quite alot of markers? I understand that not every student will bring them in...but still. Also, we're supposed to bring in 3 sharpie markers....will those be all used up also? It just seems like alot.

Oh, something else I just read. We need 2 boxes of 24 crayons with our children's initials on EACH crayon!! Wow.

For elementary school my kids find out who their teachers are on a Friday and get the supply list at that time with school starting the following Monday. Each teacher has different requests so it is individual, not by grade level. They always have pencils and paper and stuff but there's usually a requirement for all kinds of weird things like baby wipes, paper towels, film, dry erase markers, tissues. Sometimes it's: "Boys bring tissues, Girls bring Baby wipes" or something like that. They also usually need markers, colored pencils, erasers, rulers, composition books, scissors, calculators and the list goes on.

The thing I always wonder about are the scissors...they don't return them at the end of the year and the next year the kids always need scissors....don't you wonder what happens to these things? They can't all be breaking or getting lost, the teachers should have hundreds of pairs after a few years.

DD is going into middle school this year and we have no clue on supplies(or her schedule or her choice of "specials"). Hopefully some kind of list will be mailed before school starts.

When the supplies come out in WalMart/OfficeMax the lists are sent there.
When the girls started K a list was personally sent to us by the teacher.

I live around a ton of teachers and they got there "kid lists" now.

OK, this thread motivated me to go to the middle school website and see if anything was up about supplies.....I'm shocked and amazed! What follows is my DD's supply list for 6th grade:

Is this a ridiculous amount of stuff or am I crazy?

They also gave times and dates to "pick up schedules and payment of school fees"......what in the world could "school fees" be? It looks like middle school is a whole new world!

Usually band, orchestra, dance, art, science and PE have extra fees. Band, orchestra, dance and PE may each require the student to buy a lock for their locker. Orchestra, band and chorus may ask for a separate folder for music. Uniform fees for band, orchestra, dance and PE. Scince may have an extra lab fee for supplies.

Our district is pretty on the ball. It is posted on a website, in the school calendar, & it's mailed home with the report card after school is out.

Your list looks like the llist of things I get for my son every year. (Except for the homeroom items)

I hate when teachers ask for a certain color notebooks or folders. It never fails that the stores will have every color except the colors I need.

Holly cow CF, that is longer than my grocery list!
My daughter is going into 6th grade but that is still considered elementary.

DS came home with a list the last day of school. What a list!! :faint: I'll be shocked if I don't spend at least $150.

What are they requiring? Although DD's list is long, I imagine I'll pick it all up for under $20(not including the calculator which will probably be another $20). I figured out the total last year for 2 kids in elementary school and I think it was around $30 for the both of them total...adding in the calculator and compass I guess it will be more this year.

We always receive a supply list before the endo of the year. It is on my desk at the moment, I like to get the notebooks when Meijer puts them on sale for around 12 cents. I stillhave some left from last year, I will have to take inventory soon on what is left. I also get glue sicks and the other supplies at Wal-mart usually the best prices. Won't know the teacher though until about a week before.
