How Do You Explain to Kids Why Costumed Characters Can't Talk to Them ?? Any Insite ?

Any Ideas on What to Tell My Girls Why Mickey, Goofy, Buzz & Woody etc....won't speak to them ?????
Silly Question, I know, but any input would be fine & dandy !

Your kids may not buy it but I've always told my kids that if the characters had to speak to everyone all day long, they just wouldn't be able to speak by the end of the day and that it would be fair that they spoke to some people in the morning and then couldn't speak at night. They never questioned why the face characters spoke and others didn't LOL

Here's what I used with my nephew -- I told him that the characters don't speak because they're characters. Other people provide their voices. When he looked at me kind of funny, I said, "Remember when we saw Aladdin, and Robin Williams was doing the voice of the Genie? Well ... Robin Williams can't spend all day hanging out at Disney World so that the Genie can talk. He has other things to do." That made perfect sense to him. Of course, the child has to be old enough to understand the concept of a person providing the voice for a character, but most kids do, I think.

The "official Disney explanation" is that not all of the Guests who visit WDW speak English, so instead of trying to learn all the languages of the world, the Characters elect to "speak" in a more universal style of sign language, which everyone can understand.

The best explanation I've heard is js's. Just explain that if they talked to everyone all day long they'd have very sore throats. So instead they only talk during the movies and the parades, when they can speak to everyone at once.

I have been to WDW several times and never once wondered why the characters never talked when I was little. Of course, I was also very shy and didn't mind that there wasn't a big "discussion" between me and the characters. Though one time a child in front of me said "Mommy, why doesn't Chip and Dale blink?" I never thought about it that way!

My favorite explanation is the "Ariel" scenario. In L'il Mermaid, ariel had to give up her voice to become human. The characters loved us all so much and wanted to be with us so much that they were willing to give up their voices to be able to join us and play with us in the parks. My DD and nieces loved this!

I told DD5 that if they talked to everyone, their throats would hurt and it wouldn't be fair to only talk to certain people. Then, she asked howcome the princesses could talk then. Well, I told her the princesses don't see as many people as the others do and they can talk to people b/c of this. I told her you have to be special to see the princesses. She bought it for now.....
