My MIL is going to Aruba... she bought an International calling card to use, but they are saying that Aruba doesnt recognize any calling cards. So now what?? I am sure her cell phone will be way to expensive to use.

There is no way other than paying their prices or renting a cell to take that will cost an arm and a leg. Weird huh.

When my parent go to Curacao (next to Aruba and also a Dutch island, so I would imagine the rates are similar), they just use their regular cell phone and dial out. It's not cheap, but it's the least expensive option. We don't talk for long though ;)

Edited to add: I'm not sure what her cell provider is, but here are Verizon's Aruba roaming rates:

We were in Aruba last month and used our Verizon cell phones. We just called Verizon before we left, told them we were traveling internationally and they signed us up for international calling (no fee to sign up). We used the phone to call and check on our dogs and were only charged per minute! $1.29 per minute!

My mom owns a timeshare there.

You can buy calling cards in Aruba to call the States , my mom calls here all the time when she goes.

She called Verizon mobile and they said they cell wont work in Aruba as their calling network will not recognize our network. She is taking it with her just in case.. but this all is weird!

Calling Aruba
The international dialing code for Aruba is 297. Area codes do not exist in Aruba, all numbers start with 8 except for cellular telephone numbers which start with 9.

Communications
Aruba has a modern telecommunications network. Long distance calls can be placed from any telephone or from SETAR (Aruba's Telecommunications organization) locations around Aruba. AT&T customers can dial 800-8000 from special phones located at the airport and at the cruise ship docking area. From other phones dial 121 to contact the SETAR international operator to place a collect or AT&T calling card call. Cellular phone rental is also available (Call 297 820005)

When I go to Denmark, I use a V-phone. They are amazing! They cost 40 bucks and then 15 a month to use them. It's the size of a keyring and you can plug it into your computer's USB port. You then attach a headset to it and you can talk to anybody in the USA for no additional cost. I LOVE mine. The sound is fabulous. My family tells me it sounds like I'm in the same room with them. I highly recommend it.
