How do you and your significant other handle gifts? Do you hint? Tell? Buy your own?

Depends on what I want.

Some seasons I do not care.

This season we were to not exchange any gifts--and then Harry Connick Jr went on sale. I was not available to buy them for myself when they went on sale, so I hinted, demanded, hinted some more, begged, and pleaded and he did get me the tickets.

One season, I was finally ready to replace my original engagement ring that was tragically lost (by me :sad1:) 1 month before our wedding. So I hinted heavily, but receiving it depended upon him deciding whether he was ready to buy it or not.

My DH is a pretty good gift buyer though, so I usually do not have to concern myself with it. But if there is something I truly have my heart set on, I will bring it up so that he can consider spending the money there instead.

I'm usually more of an experience type person, so trips, spa type stuff, tickets to events and meals out are usually what I enjoy.

We use amazon wish lists (for books, etc) and during the course of the year if I see something I think I might like - I send him an email with gift "ideas" and he does the same. It is not like - buy me everything on this list - it is like - here are some ideas/suggestions of gifts next time a gift giving occasion (birthday/christmas/anniversary) comes along we can reference if we need an idea

We don't usually exchange gifts, though occasionally DH will buy me one anyway. This year, right around Christmas I found a young couple trying to sleep in the back of a parking lot, so I paid for a econolodge room for a couple of nights so they would have someplace warm to stay with a hot shower. I told DH that would be my gift this year. It's something he wouldn't have thought to buy, but it's something I wanted. But now I'm worried about where they'll sleep once the nights run out <sigh>

Amazon Wish List. I try to update it every few months because he uses it for Valentines, BD, Anniversary and Christmas. I have to tell him over and over that it's just a guideline tho. The first year we did it this way I had a green Kate Spade handbag and DH went to 4 - 5 stores looking for that exact bag. They ended up at the Kate Spade store at The Forum Shops; and the bag on my list was from another season & no longer available and they helped them pick out something similar (was the best gift EVER!). The wish list is supposed to prevent going all over town looking for something. I'm happy if I get something similar to what I've asked for. I don't need the exact item.
