How do the Tide solid tablets work?

I have found that they leave residue on the clothes in any tempurature but HOT.
I have also given up on them and wont buy them again. I have even tried disolving them in water before adding to the load and they still leave residue.
Maybe it is because we live in a building and the washers aren't the greatest, but we have even tried them at the laundrymat in the big double-load washers and have had the same problem.

I wonder if it is the hard water here?
