How do people live near WDW with dogs?

The fireworks are starting here (June 29th? Really?)
My dog is losing it
Non-stop barking as they are going on

Do dogs near WDW ever get used to it?

Most get use to it or the owners know when the fireworks are daily and work to help their dogs get over the anxiety.

Mine have 0 issues with fireworks or sirens. Open a door though or say hello while holding your phone and they go crazy haha.

What do the owners do? It's going to be a long weekend if they are already starting them on the 29th

That's pretty neat that your dogs got over it! I was just imagining all these dogs living near WDW simultaneously losing their minds every night lol

Mine never had issues with loud noises. Just is apart of living in the city. Some people get sedatives for their dogs if it is only once or twice a year. Some desensitize their dogs. Others have thunder coats that are suppose to help. Really depends on the dog.

Piggybacking on this thread - we have two dogs, one big and one little. The little one was a stray who was shot in the leg mad and is absolutely *terrified* of loud noises, especially gunshots/fireworks. Holidays are tough on him. Do meds work?

The ones I just heard here were about six miles away. They were muffled a bit but loud enough to make this little guy bark for 20 minutes

Not all dogs are bothered by them. None of ours gave them a 2nd thought

Off topic, but I don't know why my mad face came out looking like that, lol! It makes it look like I'm gleeful that my pup was shot!

Six miles is a long way. There are probably a lot of dogs in that radius!

It depends and you have to ask your vet if they think it would. We use pills in our Doxie when there are a ton of people over and we cook because he loves people so is already at like an 8/9 just because of the people and then he hates the oven vent with a passion so it pushes him over and he has to sit in the bathroom all night (he self puts himself there) and often pees himself. So for him to be able to enjoy the people with the scary nosie we give him a pill and he then can sit with someone bo problem.

We used to live 10 minutes from WDW and I remember seeing the fireworks but not hearing them. Of course the windows were usually shut so that could explain not hearing the noise. I don't own dogs, but I have family members who do and the dogs really hate the fireworks. Not sure how far out you have to be to not hear the explosions. Sorry about the little guy, how terrible

We're close enough to see them through the trees of the conservation area from the back launching- our dog who deals with separation anxiety sleeps through them. Now come the 3rd & 4th it may be different as it's a different show, but she's so used to them that she gets anxious when they don't go off when she thinks they should (rain delay or schedule change).

We foster dogs for a national specific breed rescue group. I talked with a gentleman interested in our foster and his question to me was, "Does he tolerate fireworks, because we live right behind Disney World. We can sit in our yard and watch the fireworks." I told him I didn;t know about the dog, but I'd be right down.

My 100 lbs Lab is terrified of fireworks. He will climb up into my lap and press his head against my chest to 'make it stop'. I do compression therapy for him (wrapping him in an ace bandage across certain pressure points (not the correct term)) and that helps calm him down. I've also found that catnip is a calming agent for my dogs. They get a pinch of it with their food and there are less freak outs during thunderstorms.

I'm ten miles as the crow flies, and can hear them most nights. Some nights are loud enough that the dogs who live behind me bark a few times, then stop.

We're on a hill, so we can watch them as well.

I'm about 8 miles away from MK as the crow flies and we can hear the fireworks inside.

When I still had a dog I lived about a mile from Universal and he was never bothered by the fireworks. I think it could be that there are so many major thunderstorms here- almost daily in the summer- that I'm sure a lot of dogs just become desensitized to loud booming noises. My dog would get a little shaky if it was a big storm but otherwise he'd be fine.

We had a dog years ago who would cower under the bed any time fireworks went off. I always felt so bad for her! But she was a pretty neurotic dog in general, so not really surprising. That dog could never have lived anywhere near WDW.

I've had more luck with thunder coats than meds.

The only solution I've found with the dog that really doesn't like fireworks is to board him out of town. He's not stressed and I'm not worried. So you may want to consider that! Luckily, a while back, the city outlawed any kind of fireworks except between 8 am and midnight on July 4th, and even then they have heavily restricted the ones you can use, which got rid of the ones that really terrified our past dogs.

For the most part, our current dogs ignore the fireworks as long as they are inside. They go absolutely nuts when someone knocks on the door, though.
