How do I?

So I need recommendations on how to keep my 2.5 DD occupied for a 4 hour plane ride? She does like to color and look at books. The only way she will be able to watch anything is on our laptop or ipod, but we worry about battery's. Any good ideas?

We take a portable DVD player (same idea as the computer), but save it for the last option. If you have shorter videos rather than a 2 hour movie it helps because then you can turn it off after the first segment and go back to coloring or reading. What about a puzzle (minimum pieces)? You may also want to bring your own snacks and a sippy cup to fill after passing security. And pack any lovies/blankies in the carryon...nothing worse than your child wanting a special something and you can't get to it.

Get energy out! Walk around the terminal and visit shops so your child isn't running up and down the aisle of the plane (wish some adults would do this)...may help to tucker the little one out for a nap too.

Maybe a clay that doesn't crumble much? You could put down a piece of wax paper on the tray to catch some crumbles or so it won't stain.

Color Wonders paints/finger paints that can be cleaned up with wipes.

Keep some new things for the flight so it isn't the same 'ol thing.

Does she like My Little Pony or Barbie? A new one may keep her interest for awhile...especially if you already bring one so you can play along.

Is she too young for a handheld video/learning system???

Stickers and paper to stick them on. Tons of snacks, preferably small ones that you can play with or sort with your child before eating - like alphabet cereal etc. I bring play-doh and use it on the tray table, wiping it down when we're finished. NEW toys - stuff they haven't seen before - the dollar store is great for that. You can make an "airplane bingo" card and have her mark when she sees things - the drink cart, a flight attendant, a green hat, etc.

At that age we brought the car seat, put ds in it, and he usually slept for at least an hour, if not longer. Maybe you'll get luck and she'll get bored and take a nap. :-) We also brought coloring book, but I recommend triangular crayons for the plane. They don't roll, which is just terrific.

Always bring your own snack food because for one, airplane food is blech! and besides the food/drink cart is never coming down the aisle when you need it. I also recommend buying at least one bottle of water after security to take on the plane (they never give enough and airplane air is dry and will dehydrate one faster than usual). A child that is not hungry will be happier and also more likely to sleep.

Bring small, non-noisy toys that your dd hasn't seen before, or if you don't want to buy a bunch of new toys, then take some out of her current stockpile and put them away for a few weeks before the trip so they "seem" new. ;) Oh, nothing that rolls, and only give her one toy at a time!

Finger Puppets was one idea I read, if you're good at making up stories.

I always brought a couple of small board books. The lift a flap books were usually a hit and would keep ds entertained a little bit longer.

I think the color wonders are great especially for this age, and the sticker books might be a great idea too. Anything sticky, even a roll of regular scotch tape, would probably be fun for achild to play with. You just want something that isn't hard to remove before the end of the flight.

hth!

When my kids were that age, they were really into Thomas the Tank Engine. I cut out a bunch of the characters from a catalogue and glued them onto popsicle sticks (the bigger craft sticks) to make little puppets. They loved telling stories with them. I also recommend the stickers!! And Crayola Model Magic - like playdoh but NO mess. Lastly, pipe cleaners - you can twist them into all sorts of things over and over - just make sure the ends aren;t sharp.

GRAVOL. Yup, with all my kids I have given them children's chewable gravol, just before boarding, except the first time travelling with my oldest. He got sick, doesn't usually have a weak stomach. I have yet to regret giving them it since. It just seems to help keep them quiet, calm, and sick free. And yes, they seem to sleep a bit more!! I have even done a 24 hr. bus ride with 3, and 5 year olds. Gravol works.
Didn't have any problems with them in their sleep patterns afterwards. WDW tuckers you out no matter your age. Sleeping was never a problem there.

I also took a empty sippy cup to pour their drink in. No spills.
And a small travel blanket, or crib blanket, helps them be cosy.

Have a great trip.

An Etch A Sketch and Magna Doodle are good too. You can get them in travel sizes.

Love the Triangular crayons idea, instead of regular ones!!!!!

We're leaving in two weeks! DD's bag consists of..

the "binoculars" that have the image disks in them (of dinosaurs, dora, princesses etc). I am sorry but I can't remember the actual name for it!

a lacing toy.

The water doodle mat and pen.

Various happy meal toys that I have stashed and things from the dollar bin at target.

a sticker book

coloring book and crayons

Another thing that I usually bring, even though it is bulky, is one of the Melissa and Doug "puzzles"...dd's two favorites are the bolt and latch one...and the dress the bear one. These puzzles are worth the money and the bulk! They entertain her for hours! I have had many peaceful meals with her playing with them at the table.

***
other things that I usually pack for the hotel since they are light and small (but have too many pieces to lose on the flight!)

a barrel full of monkeys without the barrel-stored in a ziploc

the pieces to the magnetic fishing puzzle with the rod -stored in a zploc, without the board.

magnetic dress up dolls

I remember hearing this last year-- a roll (and dispenser) of Scotch tape. Seriously, I could see DD having a ball with this. She loves to color, so we're bringing crayons, and I'm considering Play-doh. We brought the darn dvd player last time and didn't even use it.

A mini doodle pro (the kind you stick on the fridge with magnets) was great for my 4 yo on her first flight. We also had gotten her a leapster for her birthday that year.

We flew JetBlue, though, and she was interested in the cartoons on the tv more than anything else than she brought.

Thanks thoes are all really good ideas! I'm going to Target on Friday and checking the $1 bins. Thanks all!
