How do I get wireless internet?

So, I don't know too much about technology. I have a laptop with a wireless card, but how do I get wireless internet at home?

I was thinking it would make things easier after the baby is born.

You would need a wireless router. I only know that because I just got one yesterday. My bf hooked it up and did all that stuff for me, so I can't help you with that.

I know nothing about technology either.

Yeah, like DisneyAddict said. Your wireless card in your laptop needs something to, for lack of better phrasing, pick up a signal from?!? Kind of like having a cordless phone at home. You must have a base in order to get a signal to use.

I just did the same thing last week. I am very computer literate though - just not about networks. I got a Linksys router - it literally is dummy proof. My 9 year old could have hooked it up

Like the other posters have said, you need to get a router. This is something that you would either plug directly into your modem or into a computer that is hooked up to your modem.

You would be able to access your router box by going into your computer and typing in the address and clicking "go." Then you can set up something that would require a person to put in a code in order to access your wireless network. You can also change the name of your network to something you could easily recognize as your own. You can also change the password that you use to get into your router box so someone can't access it.

Then when you turn on your computer, it should pick up the signal of your wireless network.

In addition to the router, I don't think anyone mentioned that you will need high speed internet access as well - DSL or Cable. It won't work with dial-up.

I actually didn't know that - thanks for the tip. So if I already have cable internet, then all I have to do is get a router?

Correct. This is teh router I got. Very easy! It was recommended by somebody here when I was hooking up my network (last week!) It was very easy.

i was going to say turn it on and hope aneighbor has it set up wrong,,lol,, but sounds like some of these others beat me in with actual real info, ( altho steal it fromneighbors isstill cheepest route)

I actually tried that one day, but my computer locked up, so I thought I would try the legit route!
