How do I bake DH a birthday cake if there's no flour to be found in any store?

I know this is not a major problem, but seriously? What happened to all the flour?

Oh, gosh. I'm sorry. We were having issues at times but lately it seems like flour is back in stock. Yeast is also hard to come by.

Last year I asked my sister to make me a peanut butter pie for my birthday instead of a cake. I'm thinking of doing that again this year.
Maybe you could make him something different?
Or if it has to be cake then order one instead of making it yourself?

I'm going to see if I can order something from a bakery. It's just really strange.

Its really not that strange. Most people are home and cooking/baking.
Its like around the holidays when you can't find things because everyone and their mother is baking cookies etc but this is on an even bigger scale.
The companies that provide the product are also likely under staffed right now for the demand so it takes longer to get to the shelves and there's not as much to go around.

It took 2-3 weeks for me to find flour. And about 2 more to find yeast in my stores. Flour is still hard to come by, but just keep checking. Same with the yeast. I was a bit too excited finding those precious items in the stores!

It's been hit or miss finding flour around here but what's really strange is that Publix had BOGO flour a couple weeks ago. Signs all over the flour section advertising "buy one, get one" Pillsbury flour and not a bag to be found of any brand. Then later DH stopped by to pick up some things I forgot and was able to snag me a couple bags.

The Publix BOGOs have been weird lately. They sometimes seem to be promoting products that are already in short supply. This week they have Smithfield ham steaks on BOGO when Smithfield just announced they're shutting plants. I don't get it.

But regarding the lack of flour and birthday cake I've got one word. One delicious word. Cheesecake.

I am in CA and my local Ralph's ad this week was like that. Something like spending $40 on home products (TP, paper towels, and those sorts of items) and get a $10 off thing. Can't remember exactly. But pictured were TP and paper towels. I shook my head as it is impossible to get those items and it is 1 per household on those items if you do find them. Thinking this was decided upon and printed way too far in advance to make any sense now.

Boxed cake mix makes superior cakes, IMO. I never enjoy the dense "scratch made" cakes. They are always too heavy. I haven't seen any shortage of boxed cake mixes. They even have the "all natural" ones that are basically just flour, leavening, sugar, and flavoring (either cocoa powder or vanilla).

One of my local stores had their big “ Buy 3 Get One Free” promo a few weeks back. Then they slapped limits of two on all the items . All I could do is laugh at that point . Im assuming the promos are planned way in advance and it was too late to change flyers and such .

This was the first thing to go with toilet paper! By me, people are making bread, flour tortillas, cookies. Hope you can get your hands on some flour.
