How common are DVC rumors and do they often turn out to be false?

We are pretty new to the DIS boards, and we haven't even closed on our DVC purchase yet. We have passed ROFR, and we should close late next week. I'm thus glad that we'll close before January 1st when it's rumored that there will be a difference between resale points and points purchased directly from Disney.

My question is-- are rumors common on the DIS boards? Do they often turn out to be false or are they normally accurate?

I'd find it helpful to hear about past rumors and whether or not they have turned out to be accurate.

Thanks!

Rumors are a staple on the internet. Some may have an actual foundation in that there has actually been some discussion at some time regarding an issue/event/addition, but until they actually announced and come to fruition, they remain only rumor.

Some come from usually reliable sources, some come from relatives of Disney bus drivers (or from the drivers themselves) and some a complete fabrication just to see if they get a rise out of others on the internet.

Even some formatlly announced projects have ended up not actually happening. DVC announced a resort (Eagle Pines) and even started construction. Shortly afterwards, that project stopped and work began on SSR. DVC has also announced projects in Newport Beach, CA and NYC that never happened. Even BLT was denied for a couple of years, even when the old CR North Wing was demolished and the BLT construction was well under way.

At this point I would not worry too much about what might happen on Jan 1 or later. There is nothing we as members can do to influence such decisions and we all just need to find a way to make any changes work for us in the future.

Enjoy your new purchase!

Only those verified by Disney bus drivers! :rotfl2:

As Doc elaborated, rumors are always going to be plentiful if you have a group of people passionate about a subject.

Over the years, I've seen many rumors posted on these boards that turned out to be true. And many, many more that turned out to have no basis.

For many, the line between rumor and conjecture is blurry at best. :)

And there is no way to tell which is which ahead of time.

Rumors and speculation make for fun reading and posting, but that's all they are good for. Definitely not good for input to decisions.

do think something will happen - what is still to be decided.

hoping DVC will say something in Dec - but not counting on it.

Amen to that! ::yes::

Thanks for the replies. It's interesting because the posts in the operations section make it sound like there is some sort of inside information that is certain-- something like "I'm not a liberty to say why, but I know that there will be a change on January 1st."

We've already committed, and we'll close before January 1st. I has just been interesting to see so many people confident in the rumors.

Thanks again,

The BLT rumor was the most crazy one I can remember. The building was ready to top off and DVC was still not acknowledging its existance. I asked a boat captain and he said it was a "nest with 2 cranes" (ha,ha).

There was once a rumor that they would not allow you to change the names of the people in your room without canceling and rebooking. Turned out not to be true, I even called member satisfaction because I frequently book a room in my name only at 11 months and then add my friends later when I see who is coming.

I think guides are guilty of spreading rumors they hear, many times not correct. Kind of like the game where one person tells a story and then repeats it down the line, the person at the end has the story totally different.

Sometimes we get totally blindsided, like when free valet parking was eliminated. People parked their cars one night and had to pay to get them out in the morning.

This 1/1/11 rumor about resales could be a biggy. Sometimes I think they intentionally "float" rumors to see what the reaction will be.

SSR. We've only stayed at OKW last April, but we chose SSR because of the longer contract, and we liked the rooms. We will mainly choose 2BR villas because of the size of our family.

Thanks for the good wishes, and Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.

The recent changes that affect the membership have me most concerned. Offering Hawaii with a fixed week is another. To me that is a indicator that Disney is looking at the rest of the timeshare industry and modifying their program if it will increase sales and/or profits.

Having a tiered system isn't new to Disney. Disney Cruise Line, AP holders, even hard ticket events, reward Guests who are regulars, or who pay extra for a privilege or perk.

Only time will tell.
