I used AAA , it was much less and the discount was more then the $40.00 membership!

Also: go off season
Buy an annual pass and wait for AP specials
Call the hotel directly ( this always gets me better rates ).
I've used all three at the same time and have received rates. My AAA card has gotten me some good discounts too.
