The more I learn about the rules of DVC, the more I realize what I don't know. I want to make sure I have a full understanding of all the ins and outs of the program. While I understand the 7 month/11 month reservation window rules, I see that there are other rules out there ("Rule of Four") and cancellation rules, etc. Aside from reading here as much as possible, is there a single resource to learn these rules?

I guess reading your contract is the best place to start, but since I don't do that myself ...

I would try dvcnews.com - they have very good info on the program and the resorts.

Wait - all of this stuff will be in our resale contract? Cool. Didn't know that. I thought that as a resale purchaser, we wouldn't get all of the same info/materials that a direct purchaser would get. If this will be in our "packet," then :thumbsup2

I will also check out dvcnews.com, too. Thanks for that tip...

When our contract arrived, I read it............all  And there was still a ton I didn't understand. I ended up highlighting what I didn't understand, calling, asking, and getting answers to my questions. Heck I figure, when I buy a car or a blender for that matter, I want all the info. This is a big purchase and no different. :goodvibes

As a prior poster mentioned, there is a good DVC tutorial at DVCnews.com. That tutorial explains much about how DVC operates, and that site has a lot of useful information about each DVC resort.

Another source of information is available by reading the actual Declaration of Condominium that DVD has filed with the Orange County Comptroller (OCC). You can read the Declaration on that site, or download a copy to your computer. I have downloaded the Declarations for the two resorts I own (BLT and AKV), but I think the other resorts have their Declarations available as well.

To download the Declaration for BLT, sign on to the OCC website https://officialrecords.occompt.com/recorder/eagleweb/docSearch.jsp. On the search page, type in Document # 2008532599. To download the AKV declaration, type in Document# 20070050562.

If you have any problems accessing the data, let me know and I'll try to help. Good luck!

You need to ask the prior owner to provide you with documents. Insist on it as part of your settlement as you are responsible for the contents of all of them and they are not, as I understand it, routinely provided by DVC to resale purchasers (POS in particular).

Most of it is in the Vacation Planner that you get each year as well. Or in Disney Files.

If you are only using DVC for DVC resorts, I'd concentrate on using those rules first. And there really aren't too many of them. Banking and borrowing rules, cancellation rules and how to make a reservation. You can go through your entire DVC membership and never need to know about the Rule of Four or how to transfer between contracts or what the fee is for trading out. And when you need to know those rules, the process has sometimes changed anyway. And not just the rules, but the process and policies - and preferably you had some understanding of those pre-purchase (like when you get new towels, or that DVC won't provide cots).

If you want to trade, transfer, manage points across multiple home resorts, life gets a little more complicated - but if these aren't immediate needs, don't worry about them for now.

You can pick up most of this over six months reading here, where almost every situation occurs over a six month period. But do learn the players, some understand better than others. Don't ask me about transferring or if I decide to spout my expertise I really should be smacked upside the head - never done it.

When I first joined, I used the DISbaords as a pop quiz. When someone asked a question, I tried to determine the answer before reading any responses. Then I could check my work by reading the responses and if I didn't understand an answer, I could follow up with a quesiton of my own. Pretty soon, you will find yourself responding to others questions like an old pro! -- Suzanne
