How big of a carryon?

We have a duffle bag that DH want's to use as a carryon, but I'm not sure if it's going to be too big or not. It's kinda like this one, but maybe an inch or 2 smaller. We're taking Southwest.

Looks like the max dimensions for a carry-on are 10X16X24

It's probably going to be too big. Standard carry-on limit size is 21" x 15" x 9". The 21" is from handle to wheels, and about as tall as a carry-on can be and still fit, physically and properly-placed, in the overhead bin. Reading the (overwhelmingly positive) reviews at ebags, I not only didn't really see anyone mention using it as a carry-on, but one person specifically warned that it's NOT - since it doesn't fall within the 45 inch total dimension requirement.
