How bad is the drive from Charleston to Hilton Head?

I'm already looking at flights for summer since Southwest released their latest batch of flights today. I've flown in to the Hilton Head airport, which was nice but I won't do it again b/c I always end up delayed going in and out of Charlotte and end up running through that airport to make my connecting flight. I flew into Savannah last year, and it was great, but the flights into Savannah are more than twice the flights into Charleston. Plus I wouldn't have luggage fees on Southwest. Thoughts? Or what are the other options? The times on the Charleston flights aren't great, but it's better than paying the cost of the Savannah flight. And the times going into Jacksonville are worse.

Thanks!

CHS is not much farther than Savannah (and is a nice, small airport). I encourage you to have a look around Charleston before going on to HH, especially if you have never been before.

It's about a 2 hour drive from Charleston to DHHIR.

You can take the highway and go I-26 to I-95 or you can go through the marshes and take Hwy 17 (plus other roads).

The Savannah route is under an hour if it is not low country rush hour, lol.

If you can get into Charleston by noonish and do your drive before dark, the marsh ride is nice and peaceful

After dark or at dusk you have many deer. Many, many deer.

We live in Charleston...the drive is about 1:30 with normal traffic. Take US 17 South to I 95 S NOT I 26 to I 95. You will find it to be an easy and beautiful drive.

Having done this drive many times, I disagree about it only taking 1.5 hours. I used to live in Charleston ;).

But, yes, there is no need to go all the way back to I-95 via I-26.

Thanks for saying that. I was starting to think we were real slow-pokes. Last time we drove from Charleston it took us close to 2 1/2 hours because it was pouring rain and we could barely see. However, normally it took us 2 hours. It's been a few years for us (lately we've been able to get Savannah without paying more), but Charleston was a nice, small airport, very easy to get around.

Travel weekly between ChS and HHI...takes about 1.5 hours. The roads are much improved now.

It is over 100 miles from Charleston Airport to the Disney Resort. Is Highway 17 now 70 MPH speed limit?

I know that in November it wasn't, nor was 278.
