I was booked for first week of Oct for free dinning and then my son imformed me that he was playing HS football and there is no way he can go away and miss any games. I can't do September because its just too soon into the school year so I was thinking about the start of free dinning in August but I have been told it is aweful.
Over 100 every day! :scared1:
I was thinking if we spent the days in the pool or at the water parks and then the evenings having dinner and the parks, being they are opened very late with EMH it would be fine.
Am I right or should I just chalk this one up to another free dinning year gone and start looking into planning something next year as my son also plays basketball so I wouldn't be able to do anything until that season is over, he starts varsity?:confused3

Hi,

What do you mean by "awful?"

If you mean relentless heat and humidity, then yes, it is awful. It does NOT get to 100 degrees though. And as you can see from my signature, it hasn't stopped us from going many times in August. It sure is easy to pack!

If you mean large crowds, August crowds from mid-month on are quite manageable.

My advice? GO!

We went in August for the first time last year and I was so worried about it. And now we're going back this August. :thumbsup2 It was hot, yes. But not awful. We've been twice in September and once in August and the hottest I've ever been in my life was September at Disney World. I mean, you could always show up during a record heat wave - but it was just typical summer hot and humid to me (I live in Chicagoland).

We swim, rest, etc. every afternoon any way, so we were gone during the worst of the day, I guess. And crowds weren't near as bad as I had worried about either. I was so used to planning trips around value seasons and low crowd calendars and everything, that I was in a panic about it - but it worked out just great. We lost a lot of our flexibility when my son started Kindergarten this year, so I'm happy August worked out so well.

I've been in August and quite honestly I didn't think it was all that much worse than it was at home (I live in NH). What we found worked best for us was to get up early, go to the parks until about 1 pm, back to the rental house for a swim/rest and something to eat and then we went back in the early evening and stayed until the park closed. I found the worst heat of the day was from about 1 pm - 5 pm. We made sure to drink plenty of water and if we felt too overheated we went into a place that had airconditioning for a little bit.

I would go in August again.

does anyone know of the hours in the past for fd in august - i am hoping that the parks stay open quite late?

Hi,

You can check last August and September's hours here on the DIS--click "DIS Home" at the top of the page, then click "Park Hours" down the left side.

But since free dining is offered during off-peak times, parks are usually not open very late.

We've been in August twice and enjoyed both trips. The first was hotter and more crowded than the second, I think, but I'm not sure how objective my memory is on that because I was pregnant and hadn't discovered the DIS yet so that could skew my perceptions of the weather & wait times! The second was wonderful. Yes, it was in the mid 90s every day, but we did a lot of late night touring, a lot of swimming (that was our Beach Club trip - GREAT pool!) and didn't mind the heat much at all.

FWIW, there's no guarantee the first week of Oct will be any cooler than Aug. The hottest, most humid trip we've taken was for free dining '05, checking in on Sept 30 and staying into Oct.
