how are room upgrades done?

There is no science to getting an upgrade. It depends on the season that you are traveling during, whether or not the ship is full, and whether or not you have a specific stateroom already booked. We are traveling next Sunday and were upgraded from a Category 9 to a category 5! But we are going off season. Good luck on your upgrade!

It would be nice if there was a system, but there is none we know about LOL!! It would sure be an inncentive to pay your cruise off early if they did it by who pays first! I did pay our April 30th cruise off aleady but the only thing I can do now is book our excursions 90 days in advance-but we aren't using Disney for any LOL so no inncentive there LOL.

We have taken two Disney cruises. The first one we booked we got our docs and they had a stateroom number already on them. The second cruise we took the TA asked if we would book "guaranteed category __" and we said ok. This meant that we were assigned a stateroom, but were not given a room number. We were guaranteed to get a stateroom in at least our category. This second cruise was the time we were upgraded two categories above what we were guaranteed!

While it is by no means a sure thing that you will get upgraded, I think the odds are more in your favor when you agree to accept any room within your category. I think that gives DCL leeway to book people who request specific rooms or to have staterooms adjoining. Now after they finish with those requests, DCL can fill the remaining staterooms with "guaranteed category" people and then bump some up to better rooms if no more at that level is available. The risk in not getting an assigned room number at booking is that you could end up unhappy if you are particular about which end of the ship you are on or if being next to certain rooms might bother you (like laundry room or elevator)

Just my theory.

That's the million dollar question....we have sailed DCL 13 times and about 1/2 of those we have been upgraded, but no rhyme or reasons....it did not seem to matter what month we booked, what category, if we had an assigned room already or not...it is really luck of the draw.

Book what you will be happy with that way there are no disappointment if an upgrade doesn't come through!!

And just remember, "upgrade" is not always a good thing. I would rather be in a Cat. 11 than in certain Cat. 10 or 9 staterooms.
