How are points assigned for specific reservations?

What I'm trying to ask is:

If I were to have points transferred into my account that are going to expire soon, can they be used for an existing reservation that was made originally with other points?

IOW, can expiring points be "switched" for points that won't expire as soon for an existing reservation? If I find a "deal" on some expiring points and I'm about to go on my vacation, can I get them transferred in and then use them for my upcoming reservation instead of my own points that won't expire until next year?

Am I making any sense?:confused3

It depends.

Generally, MS will not "substitute" points for an existing reservation. This is especially true if there is a waitlist for some or all of the dates/units involved. That would be a way to get around the home resort booking advantage, and would not be fair to other members.

If there is still availability for the same thing you have reserved, there shouldn't be a problem "substituting" points.

They basically cancel the original reservation and rebook using the other points. But, if there is a waitlist for your time frame and accomodation, the first person on the list gets your reservation that was cancelled and you go to the bottom of the list.
