Perspective for you. I am in Europe at the moment. I put in half a tank of petrol this morning. I drove a bit further to a station I knew was cheaper. The price was 1,57.9 for a liter. Ok, now times by 4 to make it a gallon, €6.31 a gallon. Now change the euro to a dollar and I am paying 8.01 USD for a gallon of gas.

How many miles do you drive? I budget $150/week for gas for my wife and I just to go to work. My wife puts 25,000 miles on a year just herself. I put about 15,000/year on my car. That's $600/month just for gas to go to work.

Miles driven needs to be mentioned in the "you have it better than us" comments that the EU/UK usually bring up in these threads.

It is nice getting a bit of relief. Paid $3.19 last night, cheapest I've seen it since around 2006. I never saw below $3 the last time. Now I'm only spending around $110/week, but I know it is only temporary.

Your wife is driving twice the average. Smog check folks here say 11,500 is the average in California, and most insurance companies charge extra for anything over 12,000 miles a year. Of course, for every person like your wife, there is someone like my mom who when she was working never drove over 3,000 miles a year, and never over 1,000 miles a year in 27 years of retirement.

Gas dropped to $2.28 on Tuesday, then jumped to $2.44 last night.
Diesel dropped to $3.39 & stayed there.
