So- a student from Hermon High School here in Maine wrote a rap about the faculty at his school. It's disgusting really- full of nasty words and hateful language. He posted it on myspace or FB something like that and he was expelled for it. My question is this- he didn't sing it at school, so how can they suspend him for something he didnt' do within their walls or at a school function? There's an article on line at Bangordailynews.com if anyone wants to read it.

sometimes, kids have to sign an agreement with their school and it applies to outside activities too.

I Agree it's not right but ...

Because the schools are responsible for providing safe place that is conducive to education to all students and if someone is a threat to that, schools have every right to suspend/expel a student. How many kids actually call in a bomb threat from a school phone yet those kids are expelled. If the kid is stupid enough to post something like this on facebook....

Would you want your kids in the same classroom as this kid?

Well, my house my rules. The school has their rules for school and I have mine for home.

If he were my son he would be on restriction, I would strip his room to find the dope he talks about in the song and he'd be doing my fall cleaning. I think he should be in school though- it would be the only time he left the house for a while.

Well since he threatens to run over the emo kids and drive a mack truck through the doors then yes, he should be expelled. Did he really mean that he was going to do those things? I'm sure he didn't but the school has a responsibility to keep the kids safe.

I'm sure my kids are in school with kids just like him.

They are now suspending kids that are wearing tshirts that say "Bring Trevor Back" this has rather turned the vile mouthed little thug into a folk hero. :headache:

You found the song I see. Lovely huh:eek: He did go before the school board and apologize, but you can't put the genie back into the bottle.

I see both sides- schools reaching into our homes bothers me though.

They aren't reaching into your home, they are keeping him out of school, HUGE difference. His parent can try to enroll him into an alternative school or another district or they can homeschool but the fact of the matter is the kid messed up and is now paying the consequences-what is wrong with that???

I understand what you're saying, it just seems intrusive.

Since he mentions several times in the song he expects to be expelled- I don't think he should be shocked that it happened.

I know. It's a slippery slope and such a gray area. You have all these cases of cyber-bullying and such. I feel for the schools because this is a new thing that they have to deal with. I know a few parents who have gone to the school with print-outs of nasty facebook posts and emails that their child has recived. I also knwo of a few incidents where the school has called a parent regarding a facebook post/picture. I honestly don't know how I feel about it. You would think parents would do the righ thing but alot of times the parents of bullys ARE ALSO bullys, you know?

Because targeting school faculty, threatening to shoot students, and threatening to burn down the school, is bad whether in school or out of school. If you get busted for it, then you are busted.

He is lucky he is not sitting in jail.

The internet has really changed things- you put something out there and it's out there for the world to see or hear. GolfGal is right, I'm sure the school is trying to protect faculty and students from what they see as a threat.

If he was my kid, expulsion would be nothing compared to the homelife and social life he would have.

My son writes some pretty heady raps but I've never heard him swear and he does not do drugs. He gets lots of his inspiration from the rap artists he listens to. He doesn't have Facebook or anything like it and his raps are kept personal.

Should this boy get expelled for something he did not bring to school? Should teachers be suspended for friending their students on Facebook? Again, I really feel Facebook is the whole reason for much of what is currently happening or NOT happening in society today. Just say 'no' to Facebook and all will be well.

But this isn't reaching into our homes. He posted something on the internet. That's as public and widespread as one can get.

Kids need to learn that their words bring responsiblity.

Chances are the school district is paying for a home tutor during his expulsion.

This has nothing to do with Facebook and everything to do with a kid that is making threats toward other people that just happened to be posted on Facebook. Had Facebook not been around this kid would have most likely left a note somewhere in the school like kids did in the olden days. I can't BELIEVE people are defending this kid-and people wonder why our society is such a MESS :confused3:confused3:confused3:confused3

Schools are NOT required to provide a home tutor to a child that has been expelled. Once a child is expelled, the school has no more responsibility toward that child's education.

I totally agree. He knew the consequences and did it anyway and now he is whining about the consequence.

As a general rule I am not in favour of schools punishing students for things which happen outside of school and school sponsored events (dances, at teh bus stop, etc). I think often when this happens schools are overstepping their bounds and trying to parent in areas they should not be involved in. HOWEVER, I think the obvious exception to that is if the things that happens outside of school threatens he building, the staff or the students of the school (specifically as students--not Johnny said he will push Suzy down next week or Johnny said he does not like Sally from school--but yes if Johnny said he will push the girl from school down or said he would push Suzy on the school playground, etc--obviously overly simplistic scenario just to explain the point). As soon as there are threats aimed at the school then YES the school should be involved and I think in this case they clearly should be.

I think that varies by state (and possibly even by district).
