How about a DIS family soldier request thread? Inspired by TwinMom7's letter

Annie&Hallie'sMom, would you like us to PM you if we are interested, or would you like to pull names off of this thread??? Thanks so much for organizing the list! I am very excited about doing this with my family.

I, too, would like to send a care package. I just need to know to whom it goes, the address, and maybe anything specially requested.

I think by this getting organized, more people will get something even though all is shared.

God Bless our soldiers and their familes in this time.

Bumping up to make sure everyone has seen who wants to see :)

May I join in? I can send my items to someone to add to a package(I have nobody in my family or friends in the services)

I'd like to join the effort!

So far, thankfully, 3 family members and one friend are still stateside. Air Force Reservist (been serving since 9/11), Navy, Marines and Army.

Wonderful idea!!

Anyone who would like Titus' address please pm me and I'll be glad to give it to you. I also have the address of a friend's son that is at a Marine camp on the Iraq boarder (not sure yet if it's the same one as TwinMom7's son)

Titus hates MREs so I know he will appreciate food the most. He loves power bars (oreo flavor), sweetened kool aid, sweet tarts are his favorite candy (and he loves them!) but he likes all candy, has a real sweet tooth, cookies, chips, well just about any type of junk food.

I think for those of usew who want to send a package, if we can, we should try not to do it just at the beginning of the depoyment, but throughout it. Again, if we can.

If our men and women are gone for a while, I would hate for them to get things at the beginning, but then never get anythng else.

Annie&HalliesMom thanks SO MUCH for agreeing to organize this. I would like to commit to sending one care package each month as long as necessary! Just PM me with who you would like me to send to.

My daughter has two friends deployed. I'll add their info as soon as I get it from her.

:D

I emailed some friends and family about this to get their help. My cousin is a 2nd grade teacher and said she would love to have her class participate.

I passed along Bobby's address (since we don't know when Titus can receive packages just yet). So it looks like a 2nd grade class will be sending Bobby a care package :)

Just got an updated "wish" list from a superior officer...might give you some new ideas for those care packages:

Personal Care:
goggle type sunglasses - to keep sand out of eyes
eye drops (like Visine to relieve irritation from blowing sand)
moleskins (for sore feet)
Blistex, Chapstick (for dry lips from blowing sand)
foot powder
flea collars (they wear them around their ankles to help with sand fleas)
kleenex
non-aerosol shaving cream
razor blades
gum/lifesavers
hand sanitizer
sunblock

food items:

ravioli and little styrofoam cups of meals the can pop open and chow
small pop top cans of canned fruit
packaged cookies
dried fruit
pop tarts, cereal bars, granola bars

Hope this helps!

Patty

I also will commit to sending one a month. However, out of curiosity, about how much does the Post Office charge for sending a small shoe size boc over there? I just want to plan budget wise :)

It depends on how heavy the shoe box is. I've shipped to military in the past and it cost the same as shipping within the US. I'm assuming that will still be true. Anyone know?

MerryPoppins:

That will be great if it is the same cost or about the same as shipment here in the US!!!

I know that men/women were asking for magazines and know that there are restrictions. Would People magazine be a No-No? I am not sure the men would like them, but the women might.

I think this is a wonderful idea and wouldn't mind being added to the band wagon to help someone especially someone who might not get much otherwise, man or woman doesn't matter.

PLEASE count me in to send packages and letters. We signed up with another generic list for my son's first grade class- its been three months and no replies (we just sent the items to the general chaplain but don't know if the items ever got there)......the children would LOVE ANY kind of reply- even just a scribble or a message from a family DISer to let us know the items/letters were received. My first grade son is absolutely amazed that someone would leave their job and their family just to keep OUR family free. If he (well, all of us) could actually HELP a soldier WE would be eternally grateful. I know I sit here listening to the news and feel so helpless to express my gratitude for our young (and older!) men and women in uniform. PLEASE, PLEASE let my family help!

Anyone interested in having an address for a Marine sitting 20 miles from the IRAQ border, please PM me. Anything sent to him will be SHARED with as many Marines as possible in his unit. He (my son) is over 3 younger Marines and his last letter said that they really have to watch out for the "younger" ones - in order to keep their morale up. He stated in his letter that he enjoys seeing them get mail because it puts a smile on their faces. I find this funny because MY Marine is only 25, and yet he refers to the "young" guys. ;)

I had posted his address earlier in this thread, but I removed it for security reasons. As of yesterday, the address has been changed anyway, so those of you in need, please send me a PM and I'll gladly give it to you.

Patty--

I think it is a safe bet to say that Bobby has officially been 'adopted' LOL @ him being 25 watching out for the 'young ones'

Debbie
