We have arranged for someone to stay at our house and take care of our pets (one dog, one fish) for an upcoming trip.

What's the going rate for this? I asked her how much & she said she would leave that up to me. I want to be fair - a little on the generous side.

Thanks!

It typically depends on how many pets, how many visits per day and what is expected. Special circumstances like medication or special care can also add to the rate.

We have five cats and a pug who must go out twice a day. She scoops the three cat boxes once a day, brings in the mail and walks the dog, checks on the food and water, but nothing out of the ordinary. Her visits typically take between 30-45 minutes and there really is nothing to do for the house (we live in a secured condo). We pay $15-20 per visit.

That's probably on the high end due to the number of animals, but in our experience the range starts about $10 per visit and can go up to about $30 if there are a lot of special instructions. That's pretty typical here in Salt Lake.

We used to have a young married college couple pet sit and they were much cheaper ($25 per day for both visits and everything) but we also ran into some problems with their reliability. I'm a big believer in paying for peace of mind. This new pet sitter is responsible, reliable and very responsive to our concerns and requests. She follows our instructions to the letter and our pets are happy and healthy when we come home. That is worth what we pay her.

We have a dog and a cat and the gal we have will be actually staying at our house. She is charging $35 per day plus she came with great references.

We have one dog. Our sitter picks up the mail, waters plants, comes to the house on her lunch hour to let the dog out then stays overnight. She's reliable, conscientious and the dog loves her. She charges $25 per day. I'd gladly pay her double that for the peace of mind we have when she's in charge.

Missed the housesitting part of your question - doh! Our sitter charges $50 for overnights, but that includes doing everything she's normally do in her two visits and then some. Starting rate for fewer animals is closer to $30.

I sure wish I could find someone to do this for me! I have someone that I've used in the past and her name is mom.

I'm trying to give her some relief!

If anyone knows of anyone in Houston, pass it on!

Go to the Petsitters International site at www.petsit.com. They have a search by area and will give you a list of bonded sitters that service your area.

This young lady works for my husband & will be staying at our house. Since dh is off that week - she is off work too. The dog is VERY easy - he has his own doggie door & really just needs to be fed & played with a bit.

She used to clean my house - so she is very familiar with everything. She just broke up with a long-time boyfriend & is now living in a tiny garage apartment. She excited to have a little "space" for a few days.

When someone stays at your house - do you stock the kitchen/fridgefor them?

I usually have had "mom" keep the dog - but she is going with us on this trip!

Thanks!

I didn't find exactly what I was looking for (someone to stay overnight too), but I did find someone to help let her out for me, when DH and I go for those long day visits to see his family!

:thumbsup2

I've been house/dog sitting for about two and a half years now. I usually get between $20 and $30 a day, depending on the time of year (in the summer I get more because I also take care of the pool).

If they were staying overnight during that time I would definitely have something you know they eat in the refrigerator/pantry. At least something to get them started.

I don't necessarily buy anything special, but do make sure I have staples around. We live in a condo downtown with many good restaurants literally outside our door, so the sitter likes to use it as an excuse to eat well when she's here.
