House Selling Question and Furniture

I've decided to sell my house. I have a lot of furniture I want to get rid of, including most of the stuff in my front living room and my spare bedroom. Besides not needing this stuff, if I get rid of this furniture it would be easier for me to paint the rooms that need it.

Here's my question: If this furniture is gone, will it hurt the sale of the house? The furniture isn't in bad shape, but its definitely not that nice.

Thanks for your opinions! :D

I just bought a house and we looked at a bunch that were totally empty. In fact, the one that we bought was empty.

I think it's nice because you can imagine your stuff in the space easier. Also, you get a real sense of the actual room--not someone else's stuff.

I would get rid of anything that is taking up too much room.

You want the rooms to look as big as they can.

If we sell our house, we are taking a love seat out of the living room and a desk out of the bedroom before we have the house shown.

We are hoping to move soon and we are taking tons of things out of our basement, getting rid of any clutter and any extra peices of furniture we do not need.

Good luck.

I really think it depends on the person looking at the house. Some people can envision what a room would look like with their stuff if it's empty. Others like to have an idea of how much furniture will fit and what they layout would be. Generally speaking though, you don't want anything that looks really junky and you don't want too much stuff. I don't think clutter is ever good. I would keep in the basics and take out anything that maybe doesn't match or really doesn't fit in the space.

If I sell what I want to, my front living/dining room would be empty except for a cedar chest.

You will get both answers from people including realtors. I tend not to look at furniture when looking at used homes, but I do look at the mess most people leave. I loke at model home furniture because it gives you a better idea of what fits with room to spare. Like a queen bed in the master and a small chest, that really makes be leery as I have a king bed, chest/armoire. tripple dresser and bed side chest. (Night stand). To me, rooms that are empty are easier to visulize with my furniture. If your furniture looks ratty, getting rid of it is a good idea. If it is OK, maybe leaving it in the room with a new slipcover is a better idea. THe people who bought my house in AZ bought my dining room furniture because they liked it. THe people who are buying the rental I am in now are going to buy the carpets we had custome made for the bedrooms and living room, and they are going to keep my sectional also. So maybe you could think about that, also.
