We are planning on driving down to stepson's high school graduation. His mother says they live about 5 minutes from the airport, so we are planning on that area. Any suggestions on nice, but not expensive hotels, like under $150 a night? My inlaws may be coming also, in a separate room, so nothing too cheap.
Also any decent places to eat around there for breakfast, lunch, dinner? My inlaws have never been to a Sonic, so that may be a possibility.
I don't want to travel off a populated area, and all the above has to be in a safe area.

I always stay here:

Holiday Inn Opryland/Airport
2200 Elm Hill Pike
Nashville, TN 37214
Phone: (615)316-1064
Fax: (615)391-4265

Sorry, don't have the link handy, but it should be an easy find on Google. It's very easy to get to from the highway (we drive in rather than fly) & the airport is quite close.

I've stayed here:

Hampton Inn & Suites Nashville-Airport
583 Donelson Pike, Nashville, Tennessee, USA 37214
Tel: 1-615-885-4242 Fax: 1-615-885-6726

There are a lot of chain hotels right near here, so you can take your pick.

We have not been to Nashville, but I did research for a possible trip. The hotel I would have booked would have been the Hampton Inn Opryland. It gets great reviews. It also close to the Gaylord Opryland Resort, which is supposed to be beautiful if you have any time to explore.

Nice area, but another 10-15 minutes from the airport compared to my suggestion. It's an easy drive though & may be worth considering if you have time to explore the area.

I can't help with specific hotels, but definitely with the area. Anything within a 5 min drive of the airport near main roads will be fine, I would normally aim north and west generally. The opryland area is also nice, and keep in mind that the Opry Mills mall (lots of big name stores, aquarium restaurant/ rainforest cafe, IMAX theater etc) recently re-opened after flood damage and has a lot to offer.
As for meals, Sonic is a southern drive-through staple and you could always go to Waffle House for the experience. I would also suggest Bar-B-Cutie or Whitt's for BBQ.

When we stay near the airport, we always stay at the Radisson-Airport and Embassy Suites-Airport. Both (I think) would fit in your budget plus the Embassy Suites has a killer breakfast in the morning.

I've found great deals in the past on Priceline hotels near the airport.

I stayed in the Marriott last week and it was nice.

I always liked the Homewood Suites, but friends who have stayed there more recently say it has gone down hill.

There are easily 25 hotels within five miles or so of the airport. Most of them are probably in your price range. It's not an expensive area. You won't have any trouble finding a suitable place. The area is very safe. No worries there.

Can't help much with restaurants. The one meal I ate out was at a new Tex-Mex place at Opry Mills. Can't recall the name, but it was reasonably priced. The full-service restaurants are just starting to open up there, but there will be several available in the mall in a couple of weeks.

We stayed at the Homewood by the airport about 3 weeks ago, it was totally remodeled and looked like a brand new hotel.

I can't think of any hotels that would be over the $150 price target in that area, unless it is during CMA Fest or other busy period.

We have stayed at the following:

-Homewood Suites-many times, our favorite for the price, usually around $80 with a good breakfast and free weekday dinner.

-Drury Inn-good dinner, good breakfast, but have trouble finding it under $120 or so.

-Courtyard by Marriott-newly remodeled-comes up on Priceline alot.

-Holiday Inn-son loves the pool. Also a Priceline win.

-Clubhotel-clean with good food-more mom and popish-was undergoing a remodel during our visit.

Keep your hotel at 2.5 starts and up and you will have no problem finding a hotel in the airport area.

As for Sonic, there is one on Donelson Pike just down the road from the Drury/airport Hampton. We stop there for drinks during Happy Hour on our trips to Nashville.
