everything is pretty far if you are planning on walking.
I think this is the one

Hi,
We got the Gaylord Palms on Priceline (2005) - I can't remember how much for but it was pretty cheap. I don't know if using priceline is something you have thought about...but you can pick up some bargains.
There's a Quality Suites and I want to think a Radisson in that area, but none are close enough to walk, and any savings on the nightly room rate will be eaten up in cab fare.
If you rent a car you'll have to pay $10 per day to park at the Gaylord.

What kind of room did you get thru Priceline? Did you feel they treated you any differently because it was a PL reservation? DH thinks that some of our PL wins have resulted in less desirable rooms.
You can try the Comfort Suites Maingate East (http://www.comfortsuitesfl.com). We've stayed there many times and would recommend it as a cheaper clean hotel to stay at. It's right next door to Old Town not far from the Gaylord.
There is a LaQuinta Suites next to Walmart on SR535 that is within a 5-6 minute drive. You have lots of choices ~ the closest one would be the Holiday Inn Nick JR but I doubt you would want to stay there unless you are taking kids.

Find out from your conference whether they have other hotels you can stay at. My SIL attended a veterinary conference at Gaylord, but she stayed at the Westgate Leisure Resort at 6950 Villa De Costa Drive, Orlando , FL 32821. It was very close to the Gaylord, but she got it for less money, and they ran shuttles every 20 minutes to and from the conference.

Rule one of my Priceline bidding. If my room does NOT meet the expected standard of the hotel I go complain. I don't expect an upgrade, but the room had better be in the same general condition as the rest of the hotel. I didn't make them sell the room at that price and nowhere in the agreement did it say "you agree to accept an inferior room"
Now, I have won a Priceline at Gaylord and actually did get upgraded to an Atrium view.
I got Gaylord through Priceline last June for $95 a night. The room was nice, no upgrade available. Some people have also received Gaylord this month bidding Priceline for the same $95. The only problem with Priceline is that you cannot choose which hotel you get.

The room we got was lovely (although as this was the first time we had stayed there so I didn't have anything to compare it with) We had 2 queen beds, internet, terrace with view overlooking the pond/lake thing . We didn't feel the staff treated us any differently, they were all friendly and courteous. I've used priceline a few times and have always found everything to be really good.
My parents stayed at the Comfort Suites in November that someone else mentioned and it was very nice. And not too far away. We stayed at Pop Century at the same time so we made several trips back and forth between the 2 hotels and had to pass the Gaylord each time. Pop is REALLY close by. Not walking close because of the highways and such but Gaylord is the last thing you see before entering Disney property and Pop is the 1st thing you see on property.
One little suggestion...are you certain you were quoted "conference rates" because often these are lower than general rates. Also, if you are a goverment employee, that can matter significantly too. As another poster said, it might be helpful to go through your conference for ideas because they may have rooms at another hotel blocked off at a group rate. If you know others going to the conference, you might be able to arrange a group rate, too.
