Hi everybody!

We are planning a trip to Disneyland in about a month, and tis time I want to make a side trip to san Diego. Could anybody recommend good place to stay there with a toddler and our parents - something not too expensive but decent?

TIA
Taty

I just LOVE San Diego!!!! In fact, we will be visiting there for 2 nights after our 5 nights at Disneyland! I heard the Dana Inn is nice for families if you want to be close to the water. I stay at the Hyatt Islandia, but it's pricey. The Dana Inn is right across from the Hyatt on Misson Bay. Also...there are alot of inexpensive options on hotel circle if you don't care about scenery. Either way....you would only be approximately 5 min away from Sea World.

If you search "san diego hotel circle" or "map hotel circle" you will see what hotels are in that area. They aren't near water, but they are really in a great area accessible to everywhere!

Hope that helps! Here is a link that might:

Hotel del Coronado is our most famous and beautiful (rooms are $300 + a night in the summer but well worth it)...

My family from out of town normally stays at a Holiday Inn or Hyatt...

If you stay in the Downtown area or Hotel Circle area (5 mins from downtown near football stadium, Mission Valley) you are pretty close to the main attractions: Zoo (less then 10 mins), Sea World (less than 10 mins), Old Town (less then 10 mins). Then there's Legoland (Located in Carlsbad, 40 min to 1 hr drive), Wild Animal Park (Located in Escondido, 1 and 30 -2 hr. drive), and Knott's Soak City (located in Chula Vista, 20 mins)

Yes....Hotel Del Coronado is very nice...stayed there plenty, but if you are looking for a "reasonably" priced hotel you will not find it there! However, if price is not an issue - it offers alot of nice amenities and the beach is right out the door.

You might just want to look at Expedia, and search San Diego. You can find pretty good deals there. I find even if I call the hotel directly, expedia usually still beats the price!

Two weeks ago when we were down there we stayed at the Hilton in DelMar which is just N of San Diego. We were close to beach, etc and hotel was NICE!!!!

We got our rooms (we had 2) through Hotwire for $60/night/room (but FYI, they DO charge for parking in their lot)

I would say Escondido is more like 45 minutes from Hotel Circle. I live in southwest Riv. county and Escondido is about 30-45 minutes from me and the hotel circle area is about another 45 minutes or less from that. It does take another 20-25 minutes to get to the Wild Animal Park from the freeway offramp.

I wasn't too sure and knew someone could correct my time frames, I live in South of San Diego and I've been to the WAP since I was little.

We had stayed at The Double Tree. We were lucky cause we just walked in and they were running a special. It was a hundred dollars, and five of us stayed in one room-my DH, DD-2, BIL, BIL's DW, and myself.

Well, I don't have anywhere to suggest you should stay but I will say avoid the Howard Johnson!!!!!! We were there in June and it was filthy, inhabited by gang members (with police banging on the door at 7am) and in a bad area of town. There were even dirty diapers on the roof!!!

We live about an hour and a half from Downtown San Diego and when my DGF and I take short overnight trips to have a quick getaway we usually stay at the Holiday Inn on the Bay. It is almost directly across the street from the Star of India, is walking distance from Sea Port Village and about a $5 cab ride to the Gaslamp District. The hotel is a little bit older, but the rooms are well kept and have were redone about 2 years ago. You can usually get a room for about $120, and up,for a night. Again, not the very nicest hotel I have ever stayed in but it is safe and convienent.

We are staying at the Catamaran in 2 weeks, after a few nights at the DL hotel. How is the area that the Catamaran is in? Is the beach a short walk away? We have never been to California and we're looking foward to this!

The catamaran is nice. We recently stayed at their sister hotel, the Bahia, which is across the bay. we had a wonderful time.

We attended a luau at the catamaran, and spent some time in their bar and arcade. The luau was crowded but wonderful food & entertainment. There is a sternwheeler cocktail cruise back and forth from the two resorts.

I noticed that the beach at the Catamaran had a public bike trail, so its not as private as the Bahia beach, but it was still nice. You can either play in the water in the bay, or walk a few blocks to the ocean.

Please see my trip report, the URL is below, for photos from our trip, and have a great time!!!!
