Any recommendations for a decent hotel/motel on the way down from NJ to Florida? There will be 3 adults and 4 kids in all, so we'll need 2 rooms. We're looking for something cheap and clean, just to break up the drive.

I was getting ready to post something like this also!! We plan on driving down from NJ also!

Any rough idea where you'll be stopping?

That is the issue; you never really know where you are going to stop on such a long trip. We are coming from DE and trying to make it in one shot with 3 drivers, but not everyone has that luxury.

That is why she is asking for ideas of what is a good stopping point to get the best choice for low cost and quality hotel rooms to get a good night rest before taking off in the morning. You never know how far you can get or how far you should press on to get a better option.

We are also from New Jersey and have driven down a dozen times. We usually would leave around 3 am from Northern NJ and try to go as far as Kingsland, Georgia around dinner time. It's a long first day, but then you wake up and only have four hours to WDW.

There are several good motels in Kingsland. We have stayed at a Hampton Inn and also the Holiday Inn Express next door. Both were fine and clean. Stayed long enough to take a swim, eat at the Applebee's or Cracker Barrel, and then rest up for the next day.

No matter where you stay have fun! You are almost to Disney!

We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Lumberton, NC which is almost at the SC line. It was nice and a great price. There is an outback right behind it for dinner. You may want to go a bit further, though.

We have stayed at Clarks Inn in Santee SC but that was years ago, then a Holiday Inn that exit as well and that was nice. but most recently have stayed in a Baymont Inn and Suites off Savannah Exit.It was clean and reasonably priced. Went for a swim in outdoor pool and walked across the street for dinner at Sonic and woke up to a continental breakfast and a 41/2- 5 hour drive to Disney. Planning on trying to make to Kingsland GA. last exits in GA. I bought the update exit 95 book, even with GPS i love having it in my car for reference.

The best "cheap" hotel we found was the Microtel in Walterboro SC. It's around $55-$60 a night. We always make reservations so we've never done this, but folks recommend stopping at the visitor centers and getting their books with motel coupons, apparently that gives you the best rate.

We really liked stopping in Savannah GA. It's around 12-13 hours for us, gives us a quick 4-5 hours the next day.

Florence SC is another good place that is around 8 hours from WDW, there's probably one of everything there.

Thanks for all of the advice. I, too, would like to have the big part of the trip completed the first day.

SC sounds like a good place to stop. Besides, I always wanted to see that area, even if it's just for the night!

Microtel seems like a great place to stop and only a total of $77.29/night, which includes breakfast. Thanks SHARADOC for that suggestion!

Anytime we are traveling and need to stop for a night we look for a Microtel first.
One trip we booked the Walterboro Microtel but when we got to South of the Border at 8:00 AM we cancelled that reservation and booked a Microtel in Brunswick, GA. There is also a Microtel near Savannah.

We make the drive from Pa and do it in two nights. The first night we stay in Florence SC at exit 157 (for the most part half way). The Days Inn is not too bad. Not great but not too bad plus they have waffles... The second night we stay at the Knights Inn just a mile or two outside Disney (actually a nice hotel - older but super well maintained and really clean). This way we can check in at 8-9am and that gives us the whole day at Disney plus enough time to request another room if the one we get we don't like and grab dinner at the Golden Corral... The days inn is $39 and the Knights Inn over the summer is $25 and ~$50 over the winter months. We usually leave the house around 8am get to DC around 11am, Dillion SC (fuel stop) around 3 and the Florence stop at 5-6pm. Leave the next day at 8am get to Orlando around 4-5 and to Kiss around 5 or 6. We get our second fuel stop either exit 3 in GA or we make the run to Kiss and get it at the walmart on vineland Rd. Get a copy of the "red" book for hotel deals.

We are headed down in three weeks from PA. We are leaving on a Friday at 2 when the kids are finished school and plan to make our first stop in Lumberton, NC. THe last few times we drove, we would leave 6 a.m. and make it as far as Savannah staying at the Wingate at the Savannah Airport.
