Anyone have experience with this? Are they available,or to risky to wait and see.? If it was available, could we use it to take to parks?

They're not for ongoing use and they're not necessarily in great shape.

Just rent one from an off-site vendor.

You can't reserve one ahead of time and there is no guarantee that there will be one available when you get there.

Some people who have used them have also reported that they were not in the best shape and the size that was available was not necessarily the size they needed.
I agree with the other poster - if you need one, more than it from one of the off-site companies.
Follow the link in my signature to the disABILITIES FAQs thread. Post 2 of that thread has rentál information.

Resort wheelchairs, if available, are really meant for unexpected events that occur while you are there.

We needed one once and it was very large, too large for our needs like twice as large. As soon as we could we rented one instead.

I have also heard many of these wheelchairs are sub standard. They are not meant for long time use.

1) Some think that.
2) But, we issue them to anyone requesting one.
. . . whether they came in handicapped or not
. . . they are FREE, with a credit card backup in case it isn't returned
. . . just leave a PAPER credit card imprint slip at the Concierge Desk
. . . MUST be the old-fashioned carbon-copy slip (do people even remember these?)
. . . cannot be electronic or charged to the room

If someone asks at the resort, a wheelchair will be provided, IF one is available. The guest can't be asked to prove a disability when getting one, but Disney doesn't make it easy to know they are available and doesn't guarantee anything.

Disney does NOT advertise OR MENTION anywhere that they have them available and says this on their website:
Disney Featured Providers
In addition to wheelchair rentals locations throughout Walt Disney World Resort, several private companies in the local area also offer wheelchair rentals, as well as ECVs, strollers and other mobility product length-of-stay rentals.

ScooterBug: (800) 726-8284
CARE Scooter Rentals: (800) 741-2282
Buena Vista Scooter Rentals: (866) 484-4797
Best Price Mobility: (866) 866-3434
Apple Scooter: (800) 701-1971

That, plus the facts that there is no way to check on availability ahead of time, no way to reserve one and no guarantee there will be any is why people say they are meant for things that come up unexpectedly.
Guests who know ahead of time that they need one would be much better off renting from offsite - doing that, they know they will have one, can specify the size they need and will get one in good condition. That saves the resort wheelchairs for people who may need one right away because of an injury or illness.

1) Most resorts have 4-10 in the storage area.
. . . in most resorts they are in the luggage room
. . . in some, they have their own stock area/room
2) I have ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS driven to other resorts to get more chairs.
3) I cannot remember a single instance where a wheelchair request dd not get honored.

NOTE: If you get a resort chair, make sure they issue you a free chain & padlock.
If your chair is taken by someone and you can't return THE EXACT CHAIR, your
credit card gets hit for $250. Thus, lock it whenever you are away from it.

That may be your experience, but people have posted that there were none available when they asked and/or that the available one was either not the correct size or was in poor shape.
So, if someone requires one and can't do without it, my advice would still be to rent from one of the off-site providers so they can be sure of getting one and what they will get.

I should have made it more clear that information was pulled from the Disney website and just includes their 'Featured Providers'

There is a more complete list, including additional providers, in post 2 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread (located near the top of this board or follow the link in my signature). I had posted about it earlier in this thread and didn't repeat it in the post you quoted from.

I know several people that did not get a chair from the resort one of my friends got one that was way too big and pulled to the right he was exhausted after the first day of pushing his wife the rented one for the rest of the trip

But don't chain it to anything at the park, and make sure it can be moved by CMs too! this goes for all other wheeled devices, including strollers and rollators :)

I am going to do a separate post soon, but dont rent from Randys. We have always used him in the past, but this past trip on Dec. 9th was the most horrible customer service we have ever had from him and the wheelchair was not in good shape for me my dh said.

Also saying the one time we did ask for a wheelchair from the Beach Club, the wheelchair was in such horrible shape that my dh actually had to ask the cast member for his toolbox and my dh was trying to make the wheelchair operational.

He said take the chair away and it should be thrown out because it was not safe for any guest to use, so use at your own risk.
