My DH had a convention this weekend for an organization he belongs to. He had to be there on Thursday for meetings so he drove down alone and checked into the hotel. I took the kids down on Friday after school. The original room reservation was only in his name since he's on the board and the organization made the reservation for him. On Friday, he went to the front desk to add my name so I could get a key when I got there with the kids. We've done this before and the desk clerk always asks me for my ID before giving me the key. Afterall, I could be a scam artist trying to get into his room! This time, the clerk didn't even ask me my name. I gave his name and said he added me to the reservation. She said, "Yes, he did add you." She gave me the key without having any idea who I was and if I was telling the truth!
Yesterday, my older son and I were hanging out in the concierge lounge (perk of DH being on the organization's board!) and my parents called (they came with us but were at another hotel). They were ready to pick us up to go shopping. I had to drop off my laptop and my DS's book back at our room. It was being cleaned so I stuck my head in and asked the maid if I could come in for a second. She said, "Oh, sure ma'am." Then she stepped outside while we put our things away. She had no idea that that was actually my room. And because she stepped outside, she wouldn't know if I had taken anything while I was in there! I was ready to show her my room key but she was out of there so quickly and didn't even ask to see it.
I was a little surprised that I was able to get into the room so easily without anyone ever making sure I was really supposed to be there. I would hope the maid wouldn't let just anyone walk into any room when they have the door propped open. And the desk clerk just handing me the key? It seemed rather strange.
