Hey all!

DH & I will be taking our first every trip to DL next February! :yay:

We're going for the Podcast ABD trip, but want to arrive a few days before it starts. We're DVC members, but I couldn't get a room at the GCV - we waitlisted, but who knows if that'll come through.

So, I was trying to figure out a nice place to stay that's really close. We're not going to have a car, so the walking distance thing is very important! There are just so many 'good neighbor' hotels, that I don't even know where to start! Basically, we're looking for something reasonably priced, but CLEAN!! ;) Can anybody recommend a place for us to check out?

TIA!

Two popular good neighbors around this forum are HoJo's and Candy Cane Inn (CCI). We have done HoJo's and Best Western Park Place Inn - which is the closest good neighbor to the gates.

We really enjoyed the Candy Cane. It was clean, the beds were comfy and the breakfast was better than most. It is also wonderful to have the shuttle at the end of the night when your feet are tired. The staff have always been very helpful and the grounds are well kept.

It was nice having little stores next door and a small strip mall across the street for quick eats.

My best friend loves the HoJo and raves about it.

I've stayed at the Best Western Anaheim Inn, Anaheim Ramada Hotel at the Main Gate and and the Desert Palm Suites, they were really nice. The Desert Palm were on Katella and a little further of a walk. I've always gotten really good rates at the BWAI though.

Stayed at the HOJO and Fairfield INN. Liked both. Walk was fine even after a long day.

We just got home from a stay at Best Western Anaheim Inn. I really liked it. It is so close and the rooms were very clean. We had a ground floor room and had no issues with noise. It was great no free breakfast but also no parking or hidden fees. They have a fridge and microwave we brought a lot of our own food. The walk is about 5 minutes to the front gates super easy. I have also stayed at HoJo and liked it but the walk is farther and the entertainment rates are not always available.

My favorite offsite is Candy Cane Inn, I prefer it to Hojos. The walk is about the same, but I like the walk from CCI better -more shaded and better separation from traffic, no crossing Harbor Blvd. CCI has a breakfast, none at Hojo. CCI has a dedicated shuttle going to and from the parks. Twice and hour it leaves from the inn and twice an hour from the parks. The rooms are not spacious at CCI but very nice and clean with good beds! Both places offer some discounts.

2 thumbs up for Hojo's for a huge variety of reasons but I LOVE how clean and tidy Hojo's housekeeping is with the rooms, it's incredible.

The walk isn't bad at all, around 8 minutes. We've done that walk to the Disney Parks and back sometimes 3 times in a day.

The coffee machine (Keurig) with the nice 'to-go' cups is great, so is the in-room safe, GREAT Heavenly(TM) beds, (pillow top deluxe mattresses, and the pillows are great too.) I am going to have to ask them how they get the case all tucked in around the pillow like that!) Housekeeping does a fantastic job on washing the sheets they feel really clean and crisp, and smell great, too. (Not an over-powering scent, just a nice clean scent.) The kids pool area is great, (splash area, pirate themed for kids.) There is also a really nice garden pool. You can watch fireworks from the hot tub if you want to! The hot tub is conveniently located close to the kids play area so tired parents can soak their feet while the little ones play. The gift shop is loaded with anything you need, it's awesome! Annual passholders also get a 10% discount on gift shop items, with the exception of alcohol. 15% discount off regular rates on Hojo reservations by requesting the DIS board rate, (you MUST phone the hotel directly, do NOT go through the 1-800 toll free switch board... you have to call in-house reservations here: 714-776-6120.
You can also receive 20% off of regular rates by being an annual passholder to Disneyland parks, and, if you're lucky enough to snag the entertainment rate, it's very, very low priced. (See when Entertainment Rates are available, here, as well as some prices: You need to keep checking off and on, or join up on facebook with HoJo Anaheim as your friend, and they will notify you when new dates become released for the entertainment rate.

You do have to purchase an Entertainment Book to show them the card but some people on these boards might have a spare maybe...) I am not sure if all of the rooms have balconies but I believe most do.

Wow, thanks for all the info, guys! I have a lot of places to check into...

Quick question, though...for those of you who mentioned the Candy Cane Inn, how far of a walk would you say it is? Less than 10 minutes?

We spend a minimum of two weeks a year in WDW, but have never visited the 'original' - long overdue! But, as a result, it's so hard for me to picture all these places being within walking distance!

Oh, and CrazyDuck, we really didn't want to use that many points for our stay - we don't have all that many to spare this time around. That's why we didn't try for the Disneyland Hotel or The Paradise Pier Hotel!

Anything on S. Harbor Blvd is about a 10-15 minute walk. Half of that will be on Disney property. Trust me, they're close. Close enough that you can go there in the middle of the day and take a nap.

Yes, I would say 10 minutes or less. It really is a pleasant walk. We have stayed at the Candy Cane Inn three times, although none of them in the last 2 years since we keep getting better deals elsewhere. We would like to stay at CCI again though. If you're a AAA member, you can often get a $10 discount and that helps some. Use code Dis when booking online or let them know you're a AAA member when booking by phone.

The link I gave in post #2 answers this:

"How Far Is It?" (shows actual distances in feet from hotels to DLR entrance plaza) www.mouseplanet.com/articles.php?art=mm060329as

Hotel: Candy Cane Inn
From Closest Rooms: 2,876 feet
From Farthest Rooms: 3,415 feet

IMO the walking distance hotels at DLR are a huge advantage over WDW which WDW vets do not always appreciate until they have actually been to DLR. Numerous hotels in the above link (and some not even in the link) have hotel rooms which are 1300-2000 feet from the DLR park gates. That is closer than some of the boat or bus drops are at the WDW parks. It really allows you to minimize time wasted on transportation and rather than be on a bus you can be inside the parks!

Anything in the green area is an easy walk. I'd even consider some of the yellow area to be OK. We stayed at Cortona once, well into the yellow. And while I think it was too far to walk back mid-day, it was OK for a leisurely walk to the park in the morning. A little more of a pain to go back in the evening. But some of the hotels closer to the park in the yellow would be fine.

We just got back yesterday and stayed at the Park Vue Inn on Harbor. Definitely the closest hotel to the parks. From our door to the turnstiles was 10 minutes with our little kids. When just 2 of us adults made the walk it was even shorter. You literally cross the street and you're on Disney property. Breakfast was included and you can see the fireworks beautifully from the hotel terrace. A bottle of wine was waiting for us in our rooms as well as balloons, coloring books and candy for our girls (who were celebrating birthdays).
