My family and I are visiting Universal Oct. 12 -16. During this
period do you think it is beneficial to stay at one of the Universal
Resorts for it's express pass privileges - in other words during
this time (typically low season) is it worth the extra money to
stay inside Universal to get the pass privileges or should I just
book a less expensive hotel outside the park?

It's not necessarily low season at Universal Orlando during October due to the popularity of Halloween Horror Nights. It might not be so busy on weekdays, but weekends during HHN (while the regular park was open, not just during HHN time) I remember waiting 20-30 minutes in the express line at Hulk.

We think it's worth it to stay onsite at any time of year. Universal offers an incredible onsite experience. It provides you with a fun, yet relaxing vacation. Everything's in one location & easy to get to. There's nothing like being able to walk back to your hotel for a midday break or after a long day in the park. We enjoy the hotels as much as the parks. :)
