We are already making tentative plans for our fall 2007 trip- we have never been to any of the dinner shows at WDW. We are trying to decide between Hoop Dee Doo and the Poly Luau.

DH has a low threshold for corny-ness. Neither he or I like country music. DD would probably think HDD is a hoot, though. Would Dh be okay with Hoop Dee Doo?

We did 'Ohana last year, and liked it a lot. Would the Luau be too similar?

Which show is more "fun' for the family?

TIA!

If DH hates corniness, he'll hate it. I wouldn't stress too much about the country music, though...it's mostly jokey, heehaw stuff, not "my cheatin' wife shot my dawg" stuff. I detest country music, and I laughed at the stuff they were spouting.
Of course, the luau is corny, too. The whole "family, 'ohana" stuff is done to death in the show.
Come to think of it, most of Disney is pretty corny.
I really liked HDDR better than Luau, but I enjoyed both. I really really love the half-nekkid men polynesian dancers (esp. the fire dancer!). My DD17 kept looking at one of them, asking, "Ma? Can he be MY souvenir from Disney?"

We vastly preferred HDD to the Spirit of Aloha. Yes it was corny, but fun... Spirit of Aloha we found long and a little boring, food was good though.

The first time I went to Hoop I didn't like it. I think it was because we were staying at the Poly. Going from the Poly to the "camp ground western" theme didn't sit right with me.

The second time we were staying at The Wilderness Lodge. So we were more in the western setting. The second time there I really liked it. Having been to both 2 times I would choose the Hoop over the Luau.

i was going to post the same question for our sept 06 trip. we've been to the HDR and enjoyed the show, but we ate hardly any of the food. :crazy2: (we being Dh, me, 5 kids 9-14 ). I can't decide between the two. Is the "luau" to boring for kids? Especially for one DD that is very body shy? Would anyone give up 2 dinner dining vouchers for a show and a dinner that is hardly touched? If we went to the Luau, want can we expect? hhhmm decisions decisions. :headache:  :confused3

One thing to consider - Hoop is indoors, and luau is outdoors - depending on the time of the year your trip - weather could be a consideration.

We prefer HDDR as well but we like staying in Ft. Wilderness. The music to me isn't as much "country" as old-timey but it feels right for what they are doing. We actually enjoyed the food but we found ourselves looking so much at the show that we found we didn't eat a lot -- besides there is a ton of food available.

I like the Luau and usually go there on my trips - I went to the HDDR once and did not like the show or the food but I guess I am in the minority here.

HDDR. My DD(2), couldn't take her eyes off the show so much that she ate all that was on her plate and didn't notice that she doesn't like chicken, ribs, and whatever else they had. Everyone loved the strawberry shortcake. Beware: they offer free beer and wine. Both were atrocious. Bad beer is worse than no beer! And bad wine is a joke.

Hoop all the way!

We do NOT like Country music but this was entertaining ...
I also have a low tolerance for corny/sarcastic things at times and this, I didn't have a problem with....

Have fun on your trip!!!! :flower:

:rotfl: :rotfl: Thanks for the advice (and the laugh!!)

DH is not really a big Disney person (because of the lack of the "corny" gene ;) ), but he will go along with me and DD, the big Disney freaks, once every other year or so. I think he would deal with the Luau more than the HDDR, but DD and I would probably like HDDR better... maybe we'll just leave him at ESPN Club and we'll do HDDR by ourselves!! :teeth:

Ummm, that wasn't wine, that was sangria...it kinda does taste like that. What is sangria, anyway? Wine mixed with fruit juice? That's what it tastes like, anyway...
Never mind, I looked it up...
In essence Sangria is a red wine punch, created in Spain and made popular in the US at the 1964 World's Fair. It normally has red wine, brandy, and fruit. However, it can be made in just about any style you can imagine.
