Drive down and first night of honeymoon trip “home” to VWL

Who:
Myself and my DW

The plan:
Drive down to Walt Disney World from Western NY stopping in Harrisburg, PA Friday night and at friend’s Saturday night.
Arriving Sunday night and checking in at VWL and hitting Boardwalk for dinner.

Drive down:
It started to snow Thursday night and by Friday morning there were a few inches on the ground. It kept snowing during the day Friday. DW got out of work early around 12-1pm, and I finished up and got out around 2pm. Normally the drive to Harrisburg, PA is about five hours drive, but with the snow we figured it would be a little longer. We got on the road around 3pm and heading south, we were doing pretty good time wise considering the weather. We were on route 15 heading south. We were about 40 miles North of Harrisburg, a little before 9pm and a loud noise started. I pulled over and we had a flat tire. It was a dark stretch and fairly unpopulated. DW started walking down to road to find a mile marker in case I decided to call AAA. I was getting ready to start putting on the spare when a car stopped along the median going the other way. The gentleman got out, came over, and asked if we had a spare. We did and then he asked if we had a flashlight, which we did not; he went back and got one from his car. He said he was in the Army and changed tires as part of his duties. So he changed the tire, a lot faster than I would have been able to, while I held the light for him. We were back on the road around 9:30 or so, with the Army man taking nothing but my thanks for his (and his families- as I could hear a baby in his car and another voice I assumed to be his wife’s) time. So we did the last 35-40 miles to Harrisburg and our hotel at a top speed of 40, taking another hour. We got to the hotel and the desk clerk gave me to directions to a Sam’s club. In the morning we had our complimentary breakfast at the hotel, and hit the road for Sam’s club. We got there but they did not open for an hour still--at 9:30. We filled up at the gas station there, and went over to the Wal-Mart while waiting, then we got back over to Sam’s club and waited a few minutes for them to open. I headed right to the tires area and was the first one there. I got tires and they started work, saying it would be 20 minutes. We got some breakfast bars for our stay at VWL and looked around some. We went back around 10am and picked up the car, then put the spare away and got back on the road around 10:15. We were only an hour or so behind our planned 9am time of leaving Harrisburg. The rest of the trip was uneventful as we got to our friends Saturday and finished the drive to WDW on Sunday.

First night:
We were getting hungry as we got to WDW, so we decided to go straight to the Boardwalk for dinner. We drove up and using our free valet parking for DVC members parked and headed down to the Boardwalk. We had dinner at Big River Grill and Brewing works. I had the gilled meatloaf, which was good as I enjoyed the sausage in it in addition to the beef. My DW had the half rack of ribs which she enjoyed very much. She also had the Sweet Magnolia beer, which she also thought was very good, especially for people who may not like a lot of beers. After the dinner we walked down the boardwalk, she got a few pins from the pin station and traded with the CM working the stand, picking one of her “surprise” pins. The pin turned out to be Eeyore. We then picked up our car from the valet parking and headed over to VWL to check-in. we got checked in and got up to our room. Shortly after we got in the room and were looking around as it was our first trip “home” to VWL, the phone rang. DW answered it and after she got off the phone she said they were asking if we would be in the room for the next 20 minutes for our gift to be brought up. Our bags came up first and as we were putting those away they brought up a small bottle of champagne and two glasses as a gift wishing us well in our marriage.

The room:
We got room 4535, a one bedroom, which is one of the first ones headed down the hallway. The view is on the backside, looking at woods and the water beyond. We can also look over towards the Lodge and see the quiet pool and spa. There are 2 balconies—one that is off the “living room”, and one off the bedroom. My DW really likes the balconies to sit on and look out at the pool, the trees, and the lake beyond the trees.

With the exception of the flat tire, you are off to a great start on your honeymoon! I'm looking forward to reading the rest. :)

How nice of that man to change your tire. There are really some nice people in the world, aren't there?

Your home away from home sounds gorgeous.

Thanks for posting this, I enjoyed reading.
