Homophobia in the parks?

Disney did used to prohibit same gendered couples having commitment ceremonies or any kind of wedding like ceremony on the WDW property. I too phoned about it a few years back and was told that if any same gendered couple were seen by any cast member attempting to have anything that resembled a wedding on property they would be escorted off and not allowed to return! And that was from a woman who sounded about 25. ;)

WDW instituted acceptance for all couples a little over a year ago? Maybe two now? Don't quite remember the timing. We have a couple here, Rob and Scott who had an incredible Disney Fairy Tale Wedding. See the thread on the topic (have a few hours to spare, it's a long thread)! :teeth:

I'd not return to US either! We aren't US/IOA fans, so we don't go often at all. It's a shame that US didn't at least have the courtesy to respond to you.

Thought I'd better chime in on this one...

First of all, my partner and I wanted to actually have our wedding at Walt Disney World. We didn't necessarily require the wedding pavilion or anything of that nature, but when we called up Disney about it they told us absolutely NO! Actually, the woman we spoke to was quite offensive stating that they only allow "real couples" to get married. (huh???? Excuse me???) (No offense meant to anyone but she sounded like she was about 90 years old.)

I was quite upset about it but we eventually just gave up on the idea. This was about 5 years ago, mind you. I'm not really sure if this woman just didn't know what she was talking about or exactly what the situation was. I never really followed up on it, but I suppose I'm generally the type of person who doesn't just keep on at something after I've been told no by someone who should know.

Have things changed in that regard there now? Or was this just a fluke?

(We never did get married, but we're still together after 14 years so I suppose that's good enough... we're still here in Cali waiting for prop 8 to be overturned.)

Anyway, on to my "homophobia" in the parks story... I've never been hassled or anything in any Disney parks (other than the occasional dirty look while my partner and I were holding hands), but my SO and I went for a vacation to Universal Orlando a few years ago and on our last day there were subjected to some extremely nasty, rude, homophobic comments by 2 girls working in the gift shop over near Men In Black.

I was really upset about it, but didn't go to guest relations or anything as it was our last night there and it was already pouring with rain (as it was for much of that trip.) However, when I got home I sent a letter to Universal about the incident, including mentioning the extremely offensive words that these two young ladies were using (I won't repeat them here but I'm sure you can guess.)

I never got any response.

I never went back to Universal Orlando either.

Oh well.

Hey there! Welcome to the boards!

Disney changed its policy on same-sex couples in April of 2007. As mentioned above, Scott and I had our Big Fat Gay Disney Wedding in September of last year. It was a BLAST! Check the link in my signature for all the details.

I'd say try again. It was totally worth doing. We loved every minute of it. Well, ALMOST every minute I could have skipped the whole wedding crashers drama! :rotfl2:

Oh no, don't give anything away. I'm new to these boards and for the last two weekends have sat and read about 25 pages of postings each weekend. I'm going on a cruise this weekend and Disney next, so I'm not sure when I'll finish the story.

So far I LOVE all the details and all the work that you put into it. I'm still in the planning stages and the first dance has not yet been determined.

And since I am new here I won't make any "bad" comments, but boy what a goofball one particular poster is. :rotfl:

Thanks for letting me join in your planning.

Oops! I didn't realize that I should watch out for spoilers more than six months later!
