Hi all,

DS has a History/Music assignment that we need help with. He needs a song that has American History or some history in it. The examples he was given was American Pie and Billy Joel's We didn't start the Fire.

Of course when asked the question I couldn't come up with anything. But I figured my disboard friends would be MOST helpfull::yes::

Of course once you all start naming songs I'll remember them all.:teeth:

Thanks for your help.

BTW I understand it's DS homework but if I can't think of songs how is a 13 year old going to know any. I'm sure Emminem or Britney aren't mentioning anything about the past in their songs.

How about "The Battle of New Orleans"?

There are so so many songs like this, just not as many in Pop music. You need to go country or folk

Can't remember the title but how about:
In 1814 we took a little trip along with Col Jackson down the mighty Mississip

Then there is
13 Days of Glory (song of the Alamo)
The Night Chicago Died (chicago fire)
WHere were you? by Alan Jackson

And nobody should forget the Star Spangled Banner (about the bombardment of Fort McHenry)

good one! "In 1814 we took a little trip along with colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississipp..."

"In 1814" - wasn't that Davey Crockett??

"The Night Chicago died" is actually pseudo history -- the battle it describes didn't really ahppen.

no, that was a song about the War of 1812 and andrew Jackson's battle of New Orleans -- which actually took place after the peace treaty was signed, by the way.

but how about "Abraham, Martin and John"?

Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham, can you tell me where he's gone?
he freed a lot of people, but it seems the good die young,
I just looked around and he's gone...

"The Battle of New Orleans" is the song that starts out "In 1814 we took a little trip, along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississipp..." Just to clear up any confusion. :D

I think "where were you?" by Alan jackson would be good. It is more recent history that his classmates can relate to.

In 1814 We Took a Little Trip

is "The Battle of New Orleans" which was originally written and performed by Jimmy Driftwood who is something like the son of a second cousin once or twice removed of my husband's.

:p

WOW!! You guys are great!! I knew you would all be a big help. I'll have DS look over some of these and see what he thinks. I'm sure the teacher is looking for something more pop/newer, just a guess, but these all sound great.

:happy2:

THanks again.
